Do you sometimes forget what you already have? I bought two CD's in my purchase the other night that I already have at home. Am I just forgetful? Do I need to start carrying around a spreadsheet?

Just out of curiosity - what were they?

My biggest problem in all this is that all my music is digital, stored on my comp. While I have about 2800 complete CD's, only about 5% have actual hard copies that are still in my possession.

The two duplicates are the last two from the following Tower Records haul

The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour reissue - $19.99
Broadcast - Tender Buttons - $15.99
The Veins - Hollywoodland - $2.99
THe Volebeats - Sky And The Ocean - $2.99
The Minus 5 - In Rock - $2.99

So, while Im only out about $6, until I return/resell them, its kind of annoying. But, I guess these two didnt make that much of an impression on me the first time I heard them, or I would have remembered.

I dont see how Billy G does it.

That has never happened to me and, to be honest with you, I can't picture it ever happening.

This has never happened to me, although I keep all the CDs I buy. If the only copy I had was digital I could see me forgetting and buying the same thing twice.

The unique album art makes physical CDs more memorable, and probably helps me out a great deal.

Yup.

If anything, I suffer from the opposite, where I know I've bought a CD and then realize that I don't have it anymore because it was misplaced, stolen, or lent out and never returned.

It's only happened once when I mistakenly picked up a copy of Kraftwerk's 'Trans-Europe Express'. Someone on Obner (I can't remember who) benefited though cos I gave away for a mix CD.

I think I must have got it confused with 'Autobahn' since I don't have that one.

 It's in good hands.

That was especially awesome because I never see that album in stores around here. I know that mix I gave you isn't great, but I hope you don't feel like it was a total waste.

And I don't think I've ever bought a duplicate of anything unintentionally.

I don't forget what I have. I forget what I want.

This finally happened to me in the last year a couple times. It was for stuff that was on my wish list for a long time, and I had recently purchased, but not listened to (or not much). I didn't think it would ever happen to me either, but once the collection gets big enough, time is short, and there are enough distractions, it can happen.

It's happened to me once, with the Ramones "Pleasant Dreams" CD. I thought for sure it was one of the albums I hadn't upgraded from vinyl yet, but when I got home, there it was - on the shelf. Mocking me.

As far as remembering what I want, I use Amazon's "wish list" page for that. If I think of something, I pull it up on Amazon & add it to the list. Works GREAT. If I need a portable copy of the list I can always print it out, or scribble down a few things from it on a piece of paper.

Yeah, under those circumstances I can see this happening. If I've listened to it, though, and it's gotten under my skin I don't think I could buy something again.

I have to ask about the logistics of this . . . you ripped all of your CDs and got rid of the majority of them? Do you keep them backed up with another hard drive? And did you go all-mp3, or did you archive them in a lossless format? I'm curious because I keep contemplating a mass-murder of my collection but things like the concerns I ask about keep getting in the way . . .

I'd think for me it would be more a factor of how many cds I buy rather than how large my collection is.

Dude. You're only talking about the first level of disorganization/forgetfulness.

I've been at the 7th.

First level == realizing immediately as you get home.
Second level == realizing as soon as you play it (recognizing the music)
Third level == not recognizing the music, realizing it as soon as you go to put it away, either away away, or just on the stack of disks to put away
Fourth level == Not realizing until you go to put the (latter) stack of disks away away
Fifth level == Realizing when you put the unopened disk with your other unopened disks, and it's already there
Sixth level == After discover it in the stack of unopened disks, you listen to it, then put it in the stack of disks to put away, and it's already there, too
7th level == After saying 'goddamnit' in scenario 6, you go to put everything away AND IT'S THERE, TOO

I have done all of these things. It's quite embarassing.

You know what else is embarassing? Going up to the counter and asking what's playing, because it's cool and you want to obtain it, and finding out you already own it.

I have way too many CD's.

It's happened with me -- but with DVDs, not music.

I was out, on my own, and thought it would be great if I surprised my children with the DVD, Cheaper by the Dozen. I bought it; brought it home; and ta da........... my youngest says, "You bought that for us last month, dad."

Duh,
