So last week I came across this cd while hunting through the bins:

Dune: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1984)

I vaguely remember this sci-fi movie as a teenager. Sting was in it before he caught the suck. Anyways, I flip it over to see who did the musical score and guess what I found...

Written, composed and performed by Toto.

WTF?! Toto??? The, "I bless the rains down in Africa", Toto??...No way.

Way.


I demand an explanation for this. No one in their right mind could have been thinking, "Gosh, I need a composer that can make music that will fit my big budget sci-fi film....hey, wait a minute. Let's see if Toto is available!"

That was a bad move for their critical standing, though my wife and many gay men would disagree.

According to Nick Mason's book, the Damned contacted the Floyd's management because they were trying to get Syd to produce.

Excellent call. Not only a band idea in concept, but then they didn't make the music ( what little I heard ) match said concept. The very definition of "ill-conceived" .

I have no use for Garth's music, but his story fascinates me. He's somewhat of a kook.
