I got roped into a cookfest for the In Laws and my pops this year. No worries, they're good peeps, and they'll bring lotsa wine.

Wondering if any of you folks have any turkey frying stories, and if this is something I should do this year.

Talk me into it.

Talk me out of it.

Is the turkey juicy and flavorful when it's fried? I like juicy. A lot.

Have done it lots of times with my dad back home in Northern ON. The turkey is absolutely perfect coming out of the fry and not greasy at all. The only issue is you have to be careful with the turkey size, I think the max you can do in the typical pot is about 12 lbs, so if you have a lot of guests it may not be a lot of bird. But at 45 min cooking time, you can't beat it. Highly recommend.

DEFINTELY DO IT. This is the most common way to eat turkey here, and it is superior to baking in every way. More juicy and tender and not greasy at all.

We also have turkery fryers down here that allow you to do any size.

Heat peanut oil to 350
slowy lower bird 2-3 inches at a time.
maintain heat 335-350 range
cook for 3 minutes per pound
Let meat rest for 30 minutes before slicing.

We've never been able to find one that's able to handle a big bird. That's good to know.

I think a company called Bayou Classic makes them. You might be able to find them on the internet.

I've never heard somebody not liking it after trying it. My brother-in-law moved to North Carolina and brought turkey frying with him, and now all of his friends go to his house for thanksgiving.

this sounds gross. Then again, I hate poultry, so anything pertaining to juicy meat grosses me out. By juicy meat, I mean juicy poultry. I only like turkey when it's dry. When it doesn't feel like i'm chewing on flesh.

I learned how to fry the birds when I lived in Baton Rouge in the mid-80's. Good stuff. Haven't fried one in a decade, though. I went back to throwing them on the lower shelf of the smoker with a fresh ham on the top shelf so all the piggy goodness drips down onto the bird, ala Justin Wilson. Yum yum.

Oldbullee is right. It is absolutely the best and his directions come correct. We usually fry between 20 and 30 birds at our church for the elderly, poor, or those with no family. We cook them with a regular butane burner setup 6 at a time. I'm the clock man. Only way to eat turkey.
