Is anyone venturing out at 5am to pick up things?

$3.44 DVDs at Walmart
$4.99 cds at Circuit City
$3.99 DVDs at Best Buy

not to mention the crazy sub-$400 laptops.

Doubt this year I'm going to take advantage of any of the sales, but some of them sound hard to pass up--if not for the crowds.

I've seen a lot of the cheap DVD titles...nothing I'm interested in.

I hear Best Buy is gonna have BOTH seasons of "Arrested Development" for $14.99 each...I need to get Season 2, & at that price I'll bite. Probably online, though...it's worth the shipping $$$ to not fight the crowds.

Not no, but hell no. People are starting to trample others just to get in the store. Plus, you've got to wait in line for hours. My time is more valuable than that (as he types in his message on a BB).

Where are these sub $400 laptops? That's something I could use and would be willing to get up at 4am for.

They're calling for up to 2 feet of lake effect snow in Buffalo Thursday night into Friday morning. That should put a crimp in the plans of those people shopping for the $20 DVD players.

The thing is that you just don't get up at 4am, you don't sleep. You stand in line most of the night.

Being a former Best Buy employee, it was crazy to see the amount of people waiting in line overnight to take advantage of the sales. Once the items were gone, that was it, no rainchecks, nada.

People get ugly at those sale events.

Yeah, I think I'm staying in this year. My goal is to buy all my Christmas gifts online.

The Friday after thanksgiving is usually the day when most retailers go from red to black -- I.E. they stay open for 11 months of the year at a loss (this confounds me supremely), and make it up during the last month or two.

L, if I couldn't stay open at a profit, I'd close, but that's just me.

Right, right..sorry to leave the non US peeps outta the loop. Yeah, its pure and utter chaos. Seriously. The spectacle of the whole thing is just utter stupidity, and its basically a sociological student's wet dream.

My dad and I go out every year, it's sort of a fun event that we look forward too, which includes complaining about getting up early, the crowds, the freezing cold weather, how the guy in front of us in line is going to take everything we want.

And then bragging when we get home with all the loot and gifts that we are going to be giving without upc's on them, hahaha.

i'd love to get one with my tax return.

as for black friday.

there is NO WAY IN HELL you'd catch me shopping on that day.

i hate crowds. but, even more than that....i hate SHOPPING in crowds.
i don't care WHAT kind of savings you have for me. i'd rather pay full price than be stuck in that mess.

Any coincidence that this bullshit "black Friday" thing just happens to fall on the same date as International Buy Nothing Day? Naw. Couldn't be.

Chalk up another victory for mindless consumerism.

If I recall correctly, Adbusters readership and such devised IBND as a counterweight to the day after Thanksgiving at some point in the early or mid-nineties. So, you're correct, in your snark... A first, perchance?

As it goes, I hope those pissant upper-middle-class Mequon natives (using Mequon as just one example of from where the Adbusters type arise) are prepared to sit on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere if/when they run out of gas on But Nothing Day... Since to, first, use their cell-phone to call for help, and, second, to buy petrol, would be a violation of their creed.... And we all know that "radical" "leftists" are 'more Catholic than the Pope', just as "radical" "rightists" never have received fellatio from their secretaries (and that's why they could investigate, then censure, Clinton for some office nookie).
