im bored of 05 releases right now

i think we've had one of these threads before but oh well

Ill start with Roy Montgomery. He's a solo guitarist who records blissful droney, post shoegaze type stuff. He's from the South Island of NZ (Christchurch), although that doesnt stop the fricken record shop putting an import sticker on them when i go to buy them. It's the type of music that's good at conjuring up images of locations - his album Scenes from the South Island for example. Mostly instrumental, when he does occasionally sing it's a bit like a kiwi Ian Curtis. It's kinda what you could imagine Kevin Shields if he wasnt a hermit.

RIYL: Flying Saucer Attack, Pygmalion era Slowdive, GYBE! without apocalyptic preaching,

I've been digging Kane Mathis's kora recordings. www.kairarecords.com to listen.
He also is a fantastic oud player as well as being an accomplished guitarist.

caterpillar

an 1994-5ish indie rock band that never got their do.
like an even more brainy Pavement, with a hair more noise, and a tighter rhythm section.

i believe they had three propper albums, and a bunch of singles and tapes.

i'm sure there is something about them out there, but this was all i could find

its a tough call...

this guy has been excepted and rejected by christians his whole career.

has struggled with alcholism the whole time.....

his albums are a beautiful struggle between god and not....

between clean and not....

i would just suggest deciding for yourself....im not trying to be lazy, but i just have a different opinion depending on which album i am listening to.

if anyone is intersted pm me and i'll see what i can do about mailing out some examples of his work....which i think is really good....

you're bored with 2005? so in other words you've listened to everything in that other 2005 release thread?

i think you'll dig...

jasper tx - i'll be long gone before my light reaches you [deep ambient atmospherics]

library tapes - alone in the bright lights of a shattered life [dark and emotional piano music]

happy apple - the peace between our companies [sick jazz]

Do you have any of those Hash Jar Tempo albums? Some cool stuff with Bardo Pond and Roy Montgomery.

How about Richard Davies Telegraph from 1998? I have the great sounding Flydaddy vinyl version with the bonus 45, but recently a buddy dropped me a copy of the CD. Real shame that it's been oop for awhile now, but still seems to be widely available on the used market. Really nice album although the CD was mastered a bit hotter than necessary. This was his second solo after the split with Eric Matthews. There was one more after this in 2000, and then he seemed to vanish. I heard a rumor a couple years ago that there was a new album almost ready, and another rumor that he'd given up music and gone back into law practice.

RIYL some of that quirky goodness of Robyn Hitchcock (and hence someone a bit more current like the Decemberists), mixed with Nick Drake's emotional introspection, and Van Dyke Parks literary imagination. Lyrics are kind of quirky and fragmented, with lines that tend to stick in your head for days, even when you don't quite know what they mean. Good songwriter.

Solo guy from Toronto. He's also a graphic novelist. Uppy, sunny day indie pop.

Whoa! Another Mike Knott fan. Yeah Mike Knott is badass! Too bad he can be such an asshole. But yeah, I endorse the Aunt Bettys album, his solo album "Screaming Brittle Siren," and the LSU albums "Grape Prophet" and "Shaded Pain" as semi decent places to start if interested. Actually some people didn't like Aunt Bettys. I did. He is associated with Christian music but never quite fit in there. In fact, the Aunt Bettys album wasn't a Christian album at all.

I like piano and jazz. Will you be so kind and post a song of each? I don't know where to go about finding their music. And.. my soulseek rarely works and I don't have enough room left on my computer to reinstall it.

if you'll allow me to indulge into my pop punk fetish, might I suggest Ruth's Hat. They are a Michigan/Ontario based band and they play music equally inspired by early country music/50's rock/60's surf/punk. They've recorded stuff for Mutant Pop and also recently laid down tracks at Sun Studios. They have mp3s at their site www.ruthshat.com but I've got much better songs in my collection. holla at your bort.

HA!
I saw them open for Jonathan Richman at Mississippi Nights back in 1991!

Let's see if I can think of one for you...
2 defunct ones from Chicago:

Flavor Channel - I've reccommended them before. Think Smiths meet Roy Orbison meet Agent Orange (surf-punk) with two jazz sax players.

Falstaff - The leader of Shrimp Boat that was NOT Sam Prekop -- his post-SB band. Sophmoric (but funny) anatomical lyrical humor, shifting time signatures, fat distorted electric guitar, and chamber music and jazz. RIYL: Frank Zappa.

Not super-underground, but have yet to find another who knows him.

Singer-songwriter, blues finger-picking. Caught him live on Sirius 24, thought he was amazing.
