Quote:
Sufjan Stevens, Magic Numbers, and Adem Among Others To Pay Tribute to Jeff and Tim Buckley

It was only a matter of time before a group of talented artists would be asked to take part in a tribute for the father-son combination that was Jeff and Tim Buckley. Of course, both were taken from us much too soon, in separate and unfortunate circumstances. Their work never gained mass appeal in their respective lifetimes; however, the catalogues they left us with have been accepted by a fan-base that continues to grow in astonishing numbers across the globe.

In case you might not be well versed in your Buckley(s), among those covering Jeff are King Creosote, Bitmap, Adem, Stephen Fretwell, Matthew Herbert, and Dani Siciliano. Those paying tribute to Tim include The Magic Numbers, Micha P. Hinson, Sufjan Stevens, The Earlies, Engineers, Tunng, Kathryn Williams and Clayhill.

The tribute album, titled Dream Brother: The Songs of Jeff & Tim Buckley is set to have its U.S. release January 31 from Rykodisc. The liner notes of the tribute are written by Buckley biographer David Browne, who released a book under the same title.

Dream Brother: The Songs of Jeff & Tim Buckley tracklist:

1. The Magic Numbers -"Sing a Song for You"
2. Micah P. Hinson - "Yard of Blonde Girls"
3. Sufjan Stevens - "She Is"
4. King Creosote - Grace"
5. The Earlies - "I Must Have Been Blind"
6. Bitmap - "Dream Brother"
7. Engineers - "Song to the Siren"
8. Adem - "Mojo Pin"
9. Tunng - "No Man Can Find the War"
10. "Morning Theft" - Stephen Fretwell
11. "Buzzin' Fly" - Kathryn Williams
12. "Everybody Here Wants You" - Matthew Herbert and Dani Siciliano
13. "The River" - Clayhill

I downloaded this already. I can't really speak for the Tim Buckley songs since I haven't heard most of the originals but the Jeff Buckley covers are decent. I think I liked the covers of Dream Brother & Morning Theft the best.

Have you ever seen this T? It is amazing with Moose being the best of this whole lot, here is what AMG says about it (4 Stars):

Review by Tim DiGravina

The music of Tim Buckley is usually referred to with quiet, reverential whispers of an almost religious nature. That's the sort of approach found across the 17 tracks of this tribute album as well. Many of the artists here, inluding Brendan Perry and Ian Masters (here performing as part of the Friendly Science Orchestra) are worshipped on a similar, if smaller, scale by fans of alternative music. Quite a few of the artists giving tribute paid their dues on 4AD, in bands such as Dead Can Dance, Pale Saints, Cocteau Twins, and, well, Mojave 3. Since Buckley was considered to be a sort of experimental, ahead-of-his-time singer/songwriter, it's odd how close to the vest these artists approach their covers. Such a statement is certainly not a knock on the album, but the lack of experimentation does make for a kind of sameness in texture across the tracks, leading to perhaps a few yawns. At least the bands are pouring their hearts into their reproductions. Mojave 3 has never sounded more passionate about a song as the band does on "Love From Room 109 at the Islander." Ian Masters, who has shown some very unique, original sides to his musical output in his post-Pale Saints days, keeps the wacky sound effects to a minimum on "Because of You." Mark Lanegan's cover of "Cafe" is effortlessly cool and beautiful at the same time. The Czars' brittle rendition of "Song to the Siren," which closes the collection, is definitely one of the many standouts; it's one of the most touching covers you're likely to come across anywhere. The great wonder of the tribute is that all of the artists stick to their signature sounds while still providing faithful covers of the source material. It's a testament, one would think, to the talent of Tim Buckley that his songs work so well across the diverse styles of these modern performers. Fans of Buckley or any of the artists performing herein should be most pleased with this tribute.
