I LOVE living on the West Coast.

Have to digest this for a few, and is putting off my Year thing. I want to go to sleep, I hate Christmas shopping…

I liked the Singles list a bit, but this list is pretty crap. I was pleasantly surprised at Art Brut at number 3 though.

No one likes a list they didn't compile themselves but I didn't think it was that bad until I got to the Top Twenty.

Actually, this is their best effort in some time. The top 10 is less shocking... except that Twin Cinema didn't crack it.

Love the love for Sunn O))), Orthrelm, Jaime Lidell and K.F.W. I think I need to give that Broadcast and Silver Jews more spins... they've been popping up on many lists so far.

Haven't heard any of these.

Broadcast is very good. A bit too frothy for my list, but I bet I'll listen to it a bunch the next year or so. Don't have Silver Jews yet.

Lots of albums get released every year, I noticed, yeah.

Is the Kanye West album really that good? I might have to give it a listen (i.e, steal it from my brother when he gets it on bootleg.)

It's not. 2005 was definitely The Year of (C)rap.

Not a bad list. I'll probably like the one we make here a lot less.

Most of my Top 20 stuff was on their list. At least they didn't put Wolf Parade at #1. I don't really have a problem with Sufjan being there.

And, yeah, it was pretty cool to see Orthrelm on there. Also that K.F.W. album is really nice. I need to listen to it more.

I tend to agree with Slapford that this was a "better" (loosely) list. It boggles my mind how Kanye ranked so high...and Jeezy at 40? I also agree that no one likes lists that they didn't have a hand in making so, I'm using this and all other lists as a guide to maybe pick up stuff I missed. ie--Art Brut.

So is Kanye just getting votes because he's so important to music generally, via influence and production, that magazines feel the need to recognize him by name on year-end lists?

I think Pitchfork thinks they had a big hand in getting Kanye out to us last year, like the did for Arcade Fire. They gave Droupout a 9.somthing if I remember correctly. Plus, they're pimping out a fellow Chicagoan.

On the other hand, when you look at the rap releases this year, I can see Kanye making a top 50... just not #2. And... where's Edan??? Pitchfork has jumped on the mainstream rap scene moreso than any other webzine lately.

you know...i am not the biggest rap fan much anymore.......but i dont think it's a stretch to have that album in top 10-20.......in all honesty, i thought this year was pretty weak. so for PF to have it at 2 - i have no prob with that.

Not a huge fan of this list.

I was happy to see Deerhoof at #6 and Antony and the Johnsons at #5, but I don't think MIA, Art Brut, or Kanye should have been that high. All are in the high teens for me.

And where's Edan? He's my #3 and got a great review from Pitchfork!

I still like CMG's list better.

I bet our top 50 has 90% of the same discs in it.

Because mainstream rap is better, probably. That Kanye album, while not as good as the first one, is still HOTT. I like his production style, and I like the persona. He can't rap as tight as, say, Jigga, but that just adds to the charm.

That said, Jeezy should be Top 10, but folks like P-Fork still don't really GET southern rap. Probably never really will, even if they give it lip service.

- Ladytron? Really?
- Kanye at 2?
- All of these records were in their best new music/etc throughout the year?
- No Broken Social Scene?
- NO EDAN?!!!!!!! That's my album of the year right now...
- Cam'ron in the top 10/list?
- Andrew Bird? Who?

I think Spoon and MMJ released albums that will age far better than a goodly number of the Top 50 and so on...

if i had that kinda time, i'd check their "best new music" list to see the % that actually made their year-end list. it does seem they left-out a lotta stuff they lauded during 2005.

But hey I'm glad to see Art Brut so high. Terribly fun record, even if it's a bit forgettable in the grand scheme of things eh?
