Many of the lists posted here and elsewhere from different online zines seem to pick the same friggin' releases, just in a different order. That shit is tired.

If you come across any lists where you might find something new [gasp!], post them up.

Here's one...

I've seen COCOROSIE pop up all over the place recently. Heard a track and wasn't impressed....am I missing something? Should I give it a spin?

Ha! I was going to ask you if you had ever been to that site a few months ago. I randomly found it looking for some UK stuff. I didn't ask because I figured you are way too familiar with all things British, and of course, you knew of it.

There's some convoluted logic in that statement somewhere, D.

I mean, a lot of lists are going to look alike because THOSE ARE THE ALBUMS THAT CAME OUT!!! Not everybody has (or cares about) record that not even the guy who engineered the record have heard.

That's why its your job to sift this crap out for the rest os, my friend.

I mean I could throw in three or four Poo Bear/Ticklemonster EP's or B-side comps on my list and who would be the wiser?

Nathan Hogan's list on the site has Oneida. I didn't even know they had a release this year. I probably missed it on other lists.

I feel ya, D. I'm waiting for Amoeba's list to see what goodies they've got.

no, I get your point. I mean my list isnt far reaching because I'm not a music critic--I'm just a dude who likes music. But if its your job, you should effort it a bit better. I mean I'm not asking anyone to make a list of the Top 10 Self Storage Facilities in Your Immediate Area.

Didja see TinyMixTapes has Venetian Snares as part of their Top 25? Colour me impressed! Especially since I've not had a chance to check out that new album yet.

It came out early in '05. "Secret Wars" was in my Top 10 last year, but I didn't really give "The Wedding" a chance.

This piqued my interest:
Bill Frisell - East/West
Image

"Bill Frisell’s trio with the fine groove- and color- drummer Kenny Wollesen and honey-toned bassist Tony Scherr offers, on the “East” disc of the live set East/West (Nonesuch), a short history of the guitar in American vernacular music. With Wollesen and Scherr in full Bill Evans trio mode, Frisell takes country -fresh guitar twang a-la Hank Garland and puts it to work on some Jim Hall-like harmonic conceptions. And then there’s the paradoxical Frisell factor itself: despite all his up-front influences, the guy always manages to sound like nobody else in the world." - Kevin MacNeil Brown.

It was also cool seeing Emerson Dameron's name when visiting the Dusted site. Some of the Athens crowd may remember his writing in FLAGPOLE

this sounds very interesting...

Jim Fox’s piece Descansos, Past (Cold Blue) is an utterly beautiful, aching work; a meditation on journey and loss, scored for cellos and solo double bass. Fox has a remarkable ability to balance darkness and light in his music; what seems at first a state of calm questioning might, as this work unfolds, open up the listener to a deeper sense of the awe and mystery at the heart of sound and thought.

Boss. I'm seeking that out tonight. Also, the Link Wray (#10) record looks pretty good. Wray's Three Track Shack (Acadia)

"A two-disc set containing all the cuts from Wray’s self-titled 1971 Polydor record, Beans and Fatback, and a slightly lesser album titled Mordicai Jones, this is enormously big-hearted music, like John Fogerty singing with one lung over guitars rough and rowdy enough to make Sticky Fingers sound stodgy by comparison. I can’t recommend it highly enough."

The Wedding made #2 on my year-end list.

The boomkat is pretty cool. i like the sound of jules marsen & porn sword tobacco.

I like what they said in plan b magazine about lists. 'here at plan b we continue looking for new music in december just like any other month, we dont have time to make bloody lists!'

It's absolutely wonderful. I'm almost a Frisell-freak (but I'm on a budget, so I can only keep up with his solo releases and a few side-man projects,) so this was a must-buy, obviously. I can't put it any better than that review can other than to say if you like Frisell doing his "Americana" thing with a slightly stronger jazz-twist than he's been doing lately, this is absolutely for you.

And THEN you have to get on over to the Songline/Tonfield site and buy Further East / Further West (a download only, but available in several formats including FLAC,) which is a set of additional recordings from the dates of these shows. It amounts to an additional full-disc of music (spread across two discs to reflect the nature of the two trios.) This stuff is as good as what got officially released - and in spots, it might just be better.

both are very nice. Porn Sword Tobacco has a soundtrackish quality to it, very Angelo Badalementi. the Marsen Jules is very deep ambient. you can't go wrong with Type Records IMO.

By all means not obscure, however, you can stream and listen to the majority of Prefix's Top 50 and sample something you've been meaning to listen to all year.

which track did you hear? cocorosie is kinda hard to get into at first... but imo, if you heard one of their tracks and didn't like it, you probably won't like their album at all... it's all pretty much the same.

on another note, i haven't even looked at any year-end lists... i usually avoid doing so until i finish my list.
