I am intrigued by the thought of using a webcam or iSight and iChat to let the kids see and talk to their relations in another state!

Does anybody have experience with this? I am Mac-based and I don't mind springing for the dough if it's worth it, unless a cheap webcam is just as good.

I think the cheap webcams are actually pretty decent these days

From what I can tell, the biggest difference is resolution and frame rate.
