I actually liked her demos and debut album. I tried to turn some friends onto her, but they thought she was a joke, which I believe to be false. She is an amazing songwriter, and I remember months ago reading about her battle to get the 2nd album out on her terms...could've seen this coming. Unfortunate. Luck for some label who picks her up and she blows up.

I think her jazzy / classic styled stuff is good. She tends to lose it for me when she tries to blend in hip hop or other "modern" styles. Sounds forced.

It seems really strange to me that a label would make such a demand - that she trim the album of 7 songs - when there's no reason not to release it as-is. Could those 7 songs really have been that terrible? On another board, someone who had heard it said that the album overall was not very strong and it would actually benefit from the trimming.

It seems to me that if this was really all the problem was, Nellie was pretty stupid - cut the album and cut your losses. At least the thing's released. Put the remaining songs out as an EP or something. I give her credit for standing up for what she believes in, but this girl seems to be stubborn just to be stubborn sometimes.

I think she fronted the money to record her album so money wasn't the issue.

Seems to me I heard some mandate from one of the majors that their artists not overstuff CDs because the kids were complaining about buying records that only had "a couple good songs on them." Doesn't make sense to me. I'd like to hear anything she's got ready, though.

I liked her first album, and saw her perform a couple of years ago. She's quite talented.
