I swam against the tide for a couple of years- I preferred Dave Clark Five.

I drive it when the roads aren't salted and when it's not threatening snow, but yes, it is my daily driver. I'm in the Chicago 'burbs.

Cool, Bill. Do you explain in great detail to other car owners how their new cars are bland, derivative, pointless crap and you knew about all the good cars back in the day?

Coincidentally, this is supposed to be the bike that Pirsig rode immediately preceding "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".

Not a big car nut either, but that looks a lot like a '52 or '53. '49's looked like this, IIRC (my uncle owned one is only way I vaguely remember):

In my all-time top 3 or 4 automotive designs. Just beautiful from any angle.

Duuude... does that shit run? Lemme get this straight...

1. You have a running bike,
2. You're in Texas, where it never gets too cold to ride,
3. You got free time, unfortunately.

You have no reason to be bummed. Get out there and use up some tires, goddammit. I rode yesterday for like 3 miles and almost froze a nut off. BUT I RODE. Cycle = happy.

I think my great Aunt had a '64 Fairlane. It was sold off when she died. That thing was in immaculate shape. It probably had 20K original miles on it back in 90 when she died. She drove it to the grocery store and church, and kept it garaged otherwise.

I remember my little sister got her thumb smashed in it. The whole nail fell off. If someone got their thumb smashed in a door now-a-day, the door would probably bend.

Well . . .

1. Needs a little bit of work (prolly less than $500) . . . basically, new rubber, engine overhaul and registration.

2. It's in my grandfather's garage, but it's titled in my name.

3. I really think, since I am so inexperienced, that I am far too chickenshit to ride a Motorcycle in the A-TX. I'm really itching for it, though.

Well, lemme just say this much... if'n you're a-gonna start riding, a 305cc bike is an easy way to do it. It will be scary-fast to you at first, but that goes away after about 200 miles.

Get that shit tuned up, wait till the middle of the day when there's no traffic, and go ride. Go find a big parking lot, or a country road. But carry a cellphone, because old shit likes to leave you stranded.

I guar-un-tee it will put a smile on your face.

Wear a helmet, long pants, and a sturdy jacket. Every time.

You'll be the first to hear about it when I do. I mean - this is the bike that launched "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", and it's a beaut to boot.
