maybe your fan is broken and the system is overheating?

open the case (screws at back), grab a desk fan and blow it straight onto the parts and see if it starts

OooHHHHH!!!!!

So Disturbing!!!!!

Aural: you might need to get your fan replaced. If ou have a PC this should be no big deal. I think a new one costs aprox $30. If you have a nerdy friend they could probably install it for you too.

bad power supply fan is the likely culprit.

But try splates's fix before you freak out. And while you've got the case open, (and with the power off) unseat and reseat all the connections you dare mess with.

Oh Oh... but make sure if you're going to touch any of the circuits, etc that you touch the side of the case first to ground yourself. Otherwise you could f*ck sh*t up in computerland.

I will try your suggestions tonight. It's just about to meet its year-end warranty, so I wanna make sure I get parts replaced in time!

And, Polly, I'm posting from work. :)

My guess is the problem might involve your fan.

I can't know exactly what "very loudly" means, but I know that when my hard drive died last summer it spun up with a very disconcerting - and loud - sound . . . and did nothing other than that. I find it hard to believe that a hard drive would die in a year like that, but it's even harder to believe a fan would die - those things last for years. But if it were overheating, you'd at least see some action before it overheated.

What do you see when you boot up, Tania? Does the screen show anything at all? And if yes, what? If no, do the lights come on on the front of your computer?

Oh, and if this is like a Dell or something, you might want to make sure you aren't voiding your warranty by opening the case.

This sounds like a HD issue to me. Movement of a computer (especially a laptop) while the HD is 'working' can damage the drive, and if the wrong sectors are damaged, you'll lose your boot capabilities. I havent seen it much with desktops, but Ive seen plenty of laptop HD's go bad, for the simple reason that people are putting them in cases, etc. while the computer is still on/running.
