Living here in Lincoln makes someone as political as myself tend to become apathetic rather than be so constantly appalled by the futility of the elected officials in this city to govern a growing city of 225,000 people. You'd think most of them believe they live in an affluent small town of something like 5,000 people. They are completely opposed to commercial development where it is needed and favor doing it in locations that are not economically feasible for the average businessman they are so interested in protecting from companies like Wal-mart.

I heard they had a law similar to this in Seattle that was recently repealed. I think it seems pretty asanine and petty, especially since the man who introduced it owns a decent amount of property in the overvalued Historical Haymarket district near the downtown bar scene.

i think that's actually the law in new york city. are you of the opinion that this kind of littering should be legalized and/or tolerated?

Yes, I believe it should be tolerated. Living near the University of Nebraska campus and the downtown area. There are like six electrical polls on street corners that have signs posted on them. They are usually for fraternity/sorority events, concerts on campus or at a local bar or for art films at the University. The bands that most frequently put flyers on poles are religious bands playing at one of the Church Centers on campus.
The biggest problem I see in Lincoln with signs are the gluttony of garage/rummage sale signs in the grass on every street corner during the summer and early fall months.
Most bands/clubs usually do a decent job of removing any flyers once the event takes place, with another flyer for an upcoming show. In my mind, it really isn't hurting the downtown image nor does it cause as much trash as all the mailer coupons that everyone ditches as they get their mail outside their apartments.

I know I glance at the occassional one, but usually it is due to the fact that it is something put up by a Christian group that makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I guess the reason I don't understand taking the time and effort to pass and inforce this law is due to the fact that most of these signs are ignored by the normal person and not causing a problem. They usually remain intact on the poles rather than blowing down the street like cigarette boxes and wrappers thrown from cars along with fast food cups and bags.

there are some lightpoles here that are extremely torn up from years and years of staples being stuck in and being pulled out (that sounds dirty) - plus they eventually blow off and create a big mess.

On the one hand, I can see how this, uncontrolled, could get out of hand.

On the other, it's freedom of expression, the ability for the cheaper places to advertise, etc.

So...like one of those posters, I'm torn.

Aren't there usually kiosks for this sort of stuff in college towns? Seems like an easy solution

I know a guy who was fired from WeHo HOB for doing just this. SoCal Edison (electric co) got real mad when posters ended up on thier street side boxes.

I can't stand this b/c it's all over LA & the posters on construction walls are just as bad. Of the 452 ways I'm bombarded by advertising on a daily basis, this isn't the most annoying. But it should be stopped. I do not need to see 30,000 "The Game" posters on Sunset the week his album comes out.

I dont think there should be any laws against this type of thing, or stenciling.

You would think this was the answer, but all the Kiosk like things are enclosed in plexiglass and ran by the city, you have to drop your flyer off and have some city worker place it inside. I don't know how big of a hassle it is, but it doesn't seem like the city does a good job of removing old signs from them and most people don't use them. The University of Nebraska has tons of large bulletin boards in each building designated for non-campus event advertisements, but they are usually cluttered and people put their signs on top of other signs advertising similar events.

Basically the City of Lincoln seems to do all that it can to prevent college students and local bands from establishing a local art and music scene. They just cited an art gallery for drawing on the sidewalk in chalk, I wish they would do that to the kids who draw crap outside my apartment rather than in front of their house next door.

First off, I think this sort of law is pretty difficult to enforce across the board and without prejudice, so it's impractical at best. I can guaran-damn-tee you that a GWAR poster would get fined much quicker than one for a Power Team demonstration, and that's no good.

Secondly, what's to keep me from walking to my local copy shop, printing up 1000 copies of a show at a competing venue and scatter them all along the streets. Would the department really waste detective resources to sort that shit out?

When I took a speech class in college, we had to pick topics on "controversial" issues. The teacher was going around asking everyone what they were going to talk about. He got to this hippie from New Jersey. She says she's going to talk about litter. Teacher says "I'm not sure if that's really a controversial topic." Hippie said "It is in New Jersey".
