There are so many damn annoying mall punk Fall Out Boy type bands out there, I kind of gave up on keeping track of the genre. I'm looking for things in the more traditional modern punk aesthetic, but good. Things like Jawbreaker or the Weakerthans or the less cheesy moments of bands like Avail, Hot Water Music, and Dillenger Four. I'm pretty up on the more dissonent post-punk Fugazi type stuff. Any ideas?

Appreciate the offer. I have lots of problems with YSI on my crappy old computer. I'll look into them on my own, though.

a wilhelm scream
new bigwig album
88 fingers louie - behind bars
descendents - everything sucks
lifetime - jersey best dancers
strung out - teenage suburban wasteland blues
any at the drive in album
face to face (everything before and including their selftitled)
good riddance - modern guide.....
propaghandi - anyting by them
pegboy - three chord monte+strong reaction
nofx - punk in drublic or white trash.....
bad religion - everything before and including generator

...
tough to really answer your question b/c its really broad.....

i basically listed "punk" bands which was the main question i think.

surprisingly enough..the new boy sets fire album is decent

Propagandhi is all that comes to mind right now, while I'm at work.

But going back a little bit, do you have The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused?

The Distillers are a good band, Sing Sing Death House is their best cd, Akaline Trio is also pretty good

I endorse this endorsement.

Other than that... whoo boy. I keep on going back to the old and semi-old stuff. Most of the AFI canon is worthwhile, the last Bad Religion record was pretty good.
But as for new bands, yeah, um...

You could also try the bill for this festival, which seems to have invoked a little old-school fury and mayhem.

Nope. Last time I seriously thought about going was 2001(?) when Dismemberment Plan and !!! played. Always seemed like a cool deal, but a whole day-plus of that stuff can be too much to take, at least in my experience.

You ever been? Got any anecdotes that might change my mind?

just wondering...i went to them all....alot of good bands played there over the years that it was going. ie the ones you mentioned, the liars, etc, etc the list could go on and on.

being from kzoo i knew joel wick (kzoo dude, makoto records, etc) who helped put it on + i was really good friends with the guys in small brown bike (friends from college)

What I meant was that I feel like I kept up with the more dissonant Fugazi style stuff, and don't really need recommendations from that side of the punk spectrum.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions everybody.

well good luck...

also to clairfy my statement
you asked for music along the lines of
Jawbreaker -> Weakerthans --> Dillenger Four
which are 3 totally different genres of music. so that was why i made a comment about being a huge spectrum of music

Small Brown Bike. Wow. It's been a while since I heard that name.
Back when I was booking shows in Saginaw, we had them confirmed for at least 2, maybe 3, shows and something weird always came up; someone's dad died, a leg got broken, etc. Always seemed like good dudes, though.

There are some decent punk bands bubbling around on the local/regional scene here (Chiodos is probably the best-known) but I'd hazard to make any recommendations. I don't know for sure who's worth a damn, though The Swellers are about to sign w/ Nitro Records and their guitarist just did some fill-in dates on bass for A Wilhelm Scream.

There's a mag out there called AMP (www.ampmagazine.com) that comes with a couple of discs, one a sAMPler. It's only $2. Got a lot of the new punky-type stuff on it. Some screamo, some metal, some Fall Out Boy-type stuff, but *shrug*....

Some of the bands on the sampler: No Trigger, The Loved Ones, Ghost Buffalo, If Hope Dies, Dryline, Hell Promise, Skylines, Flee The Seen, The Ocean, Red Animal War, Enlow, etc. I could burn a copy for you, if you like.

the lawrence arms are essentially jawbreaker-esque. they have a new album "oh! calcutta!" out soon, but "apathy and exhaustion" and "the greatest story ever told" are most definitely worth aurally perusing.

against me! are making quite a name for themselves all of a sudden, especially after signing to a major label. i'm a fan of "as the eternal cowboy" and their latest "searching for a former clarity".

hot water music's latest "the new what next" is also great, almost as great as their previous album "caution".

hot snakes' "audit in progress" is still incredible.

the honor system's latest album "rise and run" is also pretty good and probably doesn't get listened to enough by me any more.

social distortion released "sex, love, and rock 'n roll" in 2004 which i don't know received any recognition whatsoever. it's pretty standard fare from them, i.e. - great.

and yes, paint it black is basically the best hardcore punk band to appear in the last few years, proving that dan yemin (of lifetime and kid dynamite) is pretty much the coolest guy in punk.

finally, anything that strike anywhere or dillinger four have had anything to do with are well above most anything else a "punk" band has produced in the last ten years.
