Yes, and please don't generalize us girls based on one incident with one girl. ;)

It's not. That's why I only put the frowny face, not the crying face.

Story 1:

Basically, over the summer this girl was interning here (she was a PhD student, my age, so don't get any ideas about the word "intern"). I asked her out towards the end of the summer. She said yes, but she was looking for a new apartment at the time, so her evening availability was limited. So it was kind of put off.
Maybe a week later, a few of us, including me and her, went out for drinks after work. We broke up early, as she had to go look at an apartment. I walked her to the bus/T stop and we stood there talking for a few minutes before I got on the train. I reiterated my dinner offer, and she said something along the lines of "oh definitely, hopefully this place tonight will be the one, and then I'll free up." She also mentioned how her late summer vacation plans had been canceled, so she'd have more free time then too. Looks good, right?
A few days later was her last day interning for my company. Again a group went out for drinks and again she left early, saying "I'll catch up with you soon" to me as she left. I had no contact information for her, though she presumably had my work email address.
Months pass, the only contact we have is that I find her on Friendster, ask her to be my friend and she accepts.
Finally, I IM her (I'd gotten her IM address at some point). I don't ask her out again, but we have a few decent flirty IM conversations. Finally, after several of those, spread over about 6 weeks, I do ask her out again. Unfortunately, I timed it badly as she had just said she had to go when I asked her. So she didn't respond. Not odd, since she just said she had to go. But now I haven't seen her online since and my paranoia makes me think she's blocking me. What did I do? I'll accept a no, but blocking me?
Of course, she's probably not blocking me and I'm just insane, but I still say "sigh."

Story #2 coming later.

EDIT: Should I delete this? Seems sketchy to post this whole story...

She's obviously not interested and she's trying to be nice about it. I hate that. Just be honest with the man.

Don't sweat it, Eric. She's obviously not someone you should waste your time on. I wouldn't even IM her ever again. Don't give her the satisfaction. And if she IMs you, don't respond. People like that need to be treated like shit to get a clue.

This is sure turning into a lyric-quoting post, isn't it?...

That's a good idea. But she's not online all the time, so that won't really work. That's why I think I'm just being paranoid. She may just really not have been online lately.

Story #2:

In the spring I went on a date with this young lady, and we had a really good time. However, she was going to be out of the country over the summer, and for various reasons we were unable to get together a second time before she left. In October, I emailed her to see if she was back and if she wanted to try to get together again. I got a similar answer as the above: yes I'm back, yes I do want to get together, but right now school is crazy. I tried to keep in touch with her over the weeks but emails and forth are hard. I've basically given up now, but it's still frustrating.

Clearly, dating students is the wrong idea.

Not for nothing, Eric, but in the future, I suggest you ask these women for their numbers. I think that's a good indicator of their interest. Usually women will give you a certain look if they don't wanna give you their number or they will simply say no. Getting their E-mail addresses doesn't do much cause they know they can just avoid your messages. I think you really need to stop trying to communicate thru the computer and start using the phone. I think you're social life would be a lot more clear if you did that. Women would be more clear about their interest and you won't have to stress over why she isn't online.

I have the phone number of the girl from Story #2 actually, but I didn't feel comfortable calling her in October after I hadn't seen her all summer. But not getting the phone number of the one from Story #1 was clearly a mistake.

If there is one thing I know about this world, it's that you need to get a mutherfucker on the phone and make them say yes or no, no matter what you are doing. Dating. Business. Life..trust me, it works...now if you are afraid to face facts, keep pussy futtin'

Not trying to call you out, just know the way the world works

As one of the "old people" on the board here (but happily married, I might add), I've come across a few tidbits that are helpful with my single girlfriends. Maybe you could use it too.

I have one girlfriend who is in her mid-30s, never married, dates quite regularly. She told me she recently met someone that she instantly clicked with. He asked her out for drinks, she didn't have her calendar on her at the time, and said, "I'd love to, but I don't have my calendar on me. Can you call me later so we can pick a date and time?" She wasn't blowing the guy off, she genuinely wanted to go, and even gave him the information to follow up. She said she was giving him 4 days to follow up. Luckily he did come through on day 3, but she was wondering for a while there.

Anyhow, my rant means this-- I think Chris is right, she was trying to be polite but she wasn't being upfront about it. My advice to you is: don't leave things like this open-ended-- set a deadline and if she doesn't come through during that time (whether it means contacting you via email/IM, calling you, whatever), cut her off. Life is too precious to be wasting it on crap (or people) like this.
