My supervisor sent out this memo. Don't know if it's accurate or not.

"In a few weeks, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. Call this number from your cell phone 888-382-1222. It is the national Do Not Call list. It blocks your number for 5 years."

I just read a post on this somewhere....probably here...

basically, someone from inside the cell phone industry cleared it up...

the directory service is gonna be an 'opt in' service, and wont be made just public....all the cell phone companies are banding together to make a directory service for cell phones....it wont be distributed like phone books, but you will have the option to get peoples numbers, by calling the new directory service, but only with your prior consent...

or something like that.

it cant hurt to sign up for the list either....ill search for the post though.

Well, maybe not a scam so much, but not truthful:

a) this directory is being "published" for directory assistance, not general access (i.e. telemarketers will not have access to this)
b) your cell phone number is already blocked from telemarketers due to current FCC regulations
c) there is no "deadline" to add your number to the do not call registry-- this is open to anyone at any time.

Someone just freaked out and decided to scare everyone else in the process. Typical American behavior.
