I Got Ish Wrote:
Arthur Russell makes beautiful, touching music with his cello and voice, totally dubbed out and bright like the sometimes grey morning. World of Echo is incredible. He was also a pioneering house producer and big in the club and disco scene in New York, coming from Iowa. I'd place Calling Out of Context in the middle between his dancier stuff, like on The World of Arthur Russell, and World of Echo. Basically my favourite music ever.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
My roomie got me into him last year and I'm been addicted ever since. I'm not as into his dancier stuff.
World of Echo is crazy-perfect. And
Calling Out of Context is perfect pop for me: catchy, wayward, fragile, creative, honest, and beautifully-produced. He is one of my new-found musical inspirations. I especially like how his stuff on those two albums sounds so alone and hermit-produced. It is the work of someone who has established their own world unto themselves, (not unlike the feeling I get when I listen to Moondog, Ariel Pink, or Syd Barrett).
