So I guess you have to ignore the fact that several of the songs sound a lot like Animal Collective.

I think it's a good album, too.

I liked They Threw Us in a Trench but I never got around to checking out They Were Wrong So We Drowned. What is this one like?

its more like their droney guitars with deep, pounding drums type deal

ill post a song if you want

Yeah, this one reminds of the AC. I should give it another listen.

How about just a song to get an idea. You pick me a good one.

I third that this sounds a lot like Animal Collective, whome I also really don't really like. I feel that I'm missing something, not getting AC but keep trying and trying but nothing.

This album is no way the best of 2005!

fuck that. i dig animal collective, but animal collective have yet to make anything that sounds this good. in fact, it's been a while since i've heard an album that is as sonically tight as drum's not dead. it's a very difficult thing to make looping drones sound interesting and compelling. liars pull this off by the sheer texture of crackles and perfect imperfections, which is why this album is fucking awesome.

Seriously, I'm going to have to do a track-by-track comparison when I get a chance. It has more to do with guitar textures and melodies than percussion, though.

I agree that this record has an excellent and very particular sound, but I totally disagree that Animal Collective hasn't made anything that "sounds" this good. For mood and production value alone, I would hold Here Comes the Indian up against this, and even the rough, home-recorded Campfire Songs.

Definitely a grower, but I've really been getting into this.

There are apparently two characters, Drum and Mt. Heart Attack, which represent different moods or something...not a good explanation on my part.

shit, well know you've got me thinking. it's been a while since i gave some dedicated spins to the collective, and come to think of it, i very much sonically appreciate some of their records (although not their last one). however, i'm having a hard time comparing what i like about them, they feel worlds apart. if i step back, i can see where there are some similarities between what liars are up to and what the collective does at their best: memorable melodies and weird aesthetics. however, the execution seems almost completely opposite to me, or to put it another way, the similarities kind of stop there. strangely enough, i think the liars also win the battle of accessability on this record more than animal collective usually does, but these are both very fringe bands in a sense, so that doesn't really mean a lot.
