wow, 9.3.

i loved sebadoh back in the day. i'd say bubble and scrape, bakesale and harmacy could be soundracks for my early 90s life, just leaving high school and finding the joys of college living.

i saw them once live, and the show was horrible, but i still love that band.

What's the best Sebadoh album to buy?

I only have a few singles.

I haven't heard them all, but III and Bakesale are top notch albums, you can't really go wrong with.

Ahhhhhh Sebadoh. Bakesale, Archers of Loaf's "Icky Mettle", NMH's "In the Aeroplane over the Sea", and Superchunk's "Here's where the strings come in" were all responsible for me diving into indie rockdom.

III is a bit more lo fi than Bakesale but both have great songs that completely shine through the production values. I only have a cassette for III.

Bakesale if only for the song "Rebound".

i also love "soul and fire" and "homemade" from bubble and scrape.

bakesale and harmacy are classics to me.

III is def a bit tougher to get into followed by bubble and scrape.

i always thought bakesale was boring and harmacy was a huge pile of dung.

freed weed, III, smash your head on the punk rock, and bubble & scrape were my favorites.

Sebadoh sounds incredibly dated these days, it's really hard to listen to them now

Barlow's best songwriting is probably represented on "The Freed Weed", the two disc compilation of their first two albums "The Freed Man" and "Weed Forestin'". It's mostly acoustic, with sparse percussion, and the recording values are beyond awful, but if you like stuff like the lo-fi Mountain Goats, you will love "The Freed Weed". Altogether it's something like 37 tracks.

Their overall best album might be Sebadoh III, which features Lowenstein for the first time, albeit in a diminished songwriting role (and the material he does write really isn't worth mentioning). Nevertheless, Gaffney is relatively restrained enough to keep things accessible which makes for some of his very best material in the group, and Barlow sounds fantastic with a drummer and bassist behind on songs like "The Freed Pig"

Bubble and Scrape is by far their worst album because Gaffney essentially sabotages the entire effort by going off the deep end. His stuff is just unlistenable on this disc. It's like listening to Jandek covering the Shaggs. Seriously. It's too bad, because "Soul and Fire" is probably Lou's best ever song, and Lowenstein's efforts "Happily Divided" and "Sister" are awesome as well.

Bakesale is a fantastic album, albeit a pretty sonically streamlined. The songwriting is great, but it is a little one-dimensional. Still, the album rocked my ass when it came out and still occasionally does these days.

I would start with Bakesale if you like Superchunk, The Freed Weed if you like The Mountain Goats and III if you like Pavement.

I still haven't heard "III".

I really like The Sebadoh, but for the same reason I like Better Than Ezra... it's not great songwriting or composition, I just like the way it sounds.

"License to Confuse" is great.

I'd only consider buying the reissue if "Gimme Indie Rock" is included. I didn't even know there was a new version coming out.

I just had this out the other day, and it took me back to high school completely. To me, Bakesale and Harmacy was the album you put on when you were out with a girl, and wanted to make out, cause it was just poppy enough that if she wasn't down with the indie rock, she'd still dig it. III however, was the one we put on when we were drinking beer secretly in the garage, and talking about which girl we'd like to boff. Great album.

For those of you asking about what albums to buy, do NOT get Bakesale unless you like the most generic of all generic indie rock. Bubble and Scrape is by far the best, followed by Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock and III.

Or buy it if you enjoy lou barlow not screaming at you, or you enjoy Folk Implosion-esque compositions.

Are you kidding me? Barlow's songs are always the subdued mopey ones regardless of the album. I can see not wanting to buy the earlier albums if you're for some reason not a Gaffney fan, but either way, Bakesale defines generic indie rock. Still, I'd take Sebadoh's generic shit any day over the bullshit generic indie rock that comes out today (which is about 97% of it).

"Or buy it if you enjoy lou barlow not screaming at you"

Unless you're just retarded with the English language, I take that to mean that Lou Barlow screams at you on previous Sebadoh albums. Which is why I said Barlow's songs are always the subdued mopey ones on ANY of their albums.

Gaffney & Barlow scream, and before this thread gets hijacked--suffice to say, in my opinion all Sebadoh albums are worthwhile. Sebadoh III is amazing, and I'll be picking up the reish.
