good song - sucks to have your first "single" be a cover, tho.

very true.

the rest of his album and latest ep are fantastic though.

a tour with juana molina sounds brilliant.

I don't get the love. He's a very run of the mill folkie to me.

His voice is as dull as ditchwater, which for me, is the main aspect of this sort of music since there is not much scope to be different musically.

O.k. talk to me people. Why is this amazing?

There are a bunch of folkies out there with great lyrics, great voices, great guitar chops and the wisdom when to use it....

so uh...

yeah.

see the guy live and his guitar playing is realyl tight, sucinct (sp?). he's a trained classical guitar musician so while he doesn't, yknow, shred, he's got the ability to hold down a number of rhythms.

i like his music because it's calming and doesn't require fireworks. his lyrics are sweet and his delivery is never over-dramatic, which plagues a lot of folkies.

i think the comparison to nick drake is a good one -- people complain about the extraordinary ordinary-ness of his voice, but his songs really have legs.

If you had posted this in the thread in which tania was trying to get rid of her ticket, I probably would have gone. And despite the fact that she was offering it for free, I would have paid her for her ticket because that's just the kind of guy I am. So you've let two obners down by your keeping this to yourself. I hope you can sleep at night.

While I can understand why 'critics' compare him to Nick Drake, I find these to be lazy and a little off base. The last few years if you're writing 'folk' songs, using interesting open tunings played seamlessly while singing in a low monotone voice you're automatically being compared to Nick Drake. That's just plain crazy.
Lyrically, arrangement wise, even melodically, he has a ways to go before joining the Drake camp.
While 'Veneer' has a few standout tracks, I don't think it's anything groundbreaking. As for the new one I haven't heard a note. I'm curious though.

why can't you just pay attention to everything i say. jeez!

he'll be back. he's signed to mute in the u.s. and they're re-releasing him next week, so i think theyll provide the tour backing and all that.
