i mean...wow. usually the swimsuit issue is a complete waste of time. but wow. sharapova has been my favorite player on the tour since she made it big on the scene. her looks never counted against her...

I don't think women tennis players are all that hot, especially when removed from context. I think they stand out in contrast when compared to other successful tennis players. This also helps to explain why Kournikova is a star despite no tournament success—greater ease of entry into Celebrity. Throw in a little Russian or Eastern European flavor, forbidden fruit left over from the Cold War, and voila, SI can somehow justify they swimsuit issue as sports.
