Today Slashdot reported that Massachusetts Institute of Technology student Brian Whitman, creator of Eigenradio, which got some attention on the CMJ boards last year, has come out with a Christmas album.

For those of you unfamiliar with this oddity, Whitman is playing cleverly on the reduction of diversity in popular radio by reducing that variation even more, to create data vectors that represent the largest universal elements present across a variety of different works. Interesting music, generated entirely by a computer - basically, feed data (music) to the computer, the computer digests it and finds the eigenvectors using matrix algebraic analysis of the data sets, and spits out and "optimized" tune representing all of the inputted data as succinctly as possible.

I'm downloading this Christmas album right now to see what it sounds like.

This should be right down bluejayway's alley (you are our resident stats obnerd, right?)

That is exactly how I discern whether or not a new buzz band is over-rated.

That's awesome. To think I spent the day making files of the resumes of people who will interview me when I could have been listening to optimized holiday tunes.

:D
