Say, "Sure, I can get you some Janis."

Give him/her a disc with Patti Griffin, Barbara Manning, Rickie Lee Jones, and any other female singers you can think of. Maybe that'll cure 'em.

Okay, okay. No one else will admit to it . . .

I have Janis. I actually have a box set I bought in high school. So, I have a lot of Janis.

Anything in particular you're looking for?

Obner hates Janis Joplin? Are we really that much of an elitist-fuck group?

I think I'd rather listen to Janis than any of those. Cheap Thrills is a pretty good album. I don't know what you too cool for school types have against her.

I wouldn't say hate, but her voice I find intensely irritating. She was awesome and talented and an original, but I can't stand her actual singing voice.

Mr. Spoon, er Mr. Frosted... many times over the years I have (perhaps silently) agreed with you. But in this I must conclude you are high...

Did anyone see that documentary a couple of years ago about the drugged and drunken train tour of Canada? There were a couple scenes of Joplin singing that were fit for the Smithsonian collections of what it means to be American. The raw and rangey passion of her hunger, the specific timbre of her voice, the ladder of her emotion starting clearly somewhere deep in the righteousness of her cunt... the woman rocked and rolled unlike any other.

I'm too cool for school? Oh well. Ha.

I fully admit to not dipping that far into Ms. Janis. I also full admitting to fully hating "Mercedes Benz", "Piece of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Me & Bobby McGee" enough to not want to venture any further in.

I think my anti Janis Joplin, Van Morrison, and Doors attitude is having to listen to it over and over at the local bar during college. And I was at the bar way too much.

I've never known why I don't like her voice. Maybe it's the lack of humor in it or the desperation in it. I fully admit her voice was amazing and unlike almost any other but I feel like I'm listening to a sad little girl self-destructing. That may be powerful, but it bothers me. Why Kurt Cobain doesn't bother me, I don't know.

It might have more to do with the many worshipful granola chicks from my childhood and college years who believed Janis could do no wrong. That got to be a pain in the ass. Or it may be because her passion involves way too much sweaty howling.

Anyway, I've never known why I don't like her voice. I just don't.

Too cool for school? I don't like her voice or her lyrics. Never have. I don't think that makes me cool or an elitist. I simply don't like her.

Maybe because Kurt's self-destruction was willful and preventable.

I wasn't reacting to you merely not liking her but the thought you expressed that someone needed to be "cured" of liking Janis Joplin through exposure to the more indie approved female artists you suggested.

I can totally understand how her voice wouldn't appeal to everyone, but she IS Rock 'N' Roll and there ain't nothing wrong with someone liking her. I know I do.

RE: Janis

I like "Down On Me." That's a cool song. "Piece of My Heart" used to be OK, but it's just been done to death now. I can pretty much do without the rest. I respect her talent, influence and ballsiness, though. She also gets bonus points for being from Texas, but loses most of those for having been high school pals with that hairspray-shellacked turd Jimmy Johnson.

Agreed.

It's not that she's uncool to me ... on the contrary. I, like others here, do not like her based solely on her own merits. Don't play the "hipster snob backlash" card so quickly. Some people genuinely don't like her.

I wasn't responding to people not liking her. I was responding to the idea that people who do like her need to be "cured" of liking her as expressed by Red and endorsed by Paper.

If "curing" someone of liking something by exposing them to indie approved artists isn't hipster backlash, then I don't know what is.
