How does it get any better than this? You get a mag to read while spinning the disc, and can read about the various artists as you listen. Iknow, I know- old concept, but I just LOVE 'EM! :)

My faves- CMJ (duh), AMP, Hellcar (free comic book!), WonkaVision, the latest issue of Wired, HARP (altho the new issue didn't have a CD, I noted today), and a new-to-me one I picked up today, Paste. It's got a good one in it plus a DVD, even- 4 hours of various stuff I haven't watched yet.

It's the best concept EVER, Jerry. Real and spectacular.

What are the others I should know about?

magazines I buy for the CD's

Uncut is an excellent magazine and it comes each month with an excellent CD. Unfortunately the price isn't so excellent so I've kinda been priced out of buying it lately.

Is This Music? is the local Scottish indie scene mag. To be honest the standard of writing in the magazine isn't always great but it does keep you up to date with what's going on and the free CD let's you hear up and coming local bands long before they make the radio.

Agree with the Paste. I always end up buying someone off that cd.

Just bought that issue over the weekend and haven't had a chance to either read it or watch the DVD.

But the DVD concept is pretty cool. There's a lot of stuff on there.

I also love Harp. Haven't seen the new issue out yet. Lucky you.

I agree with Uncut but it's a bit too pricey for me.

Filter has a pretty decent sampler. Some of the Vice compliations I have aren't too shabby either.

And then of course, CMJ & Mojo.

And for my electronica needs: XLR8R & URB. No wait, URB used to be good- not anymore.

Tell me more about the 'Paste' DVD. It's 4 hours long?

It's got short films (Richard Stern- The Bar, etc.), it's got film clips (Lemony Snickets, etc.), On DVD (Short Works by Hal Hartley, etc.), music videos (21 of 'em!), music on DVD (12 songs!) and stuff from the Palm Show, whatever that is.

I can't see where Paste has a web site.

Awesome!

I've flipped through Paste before, but I might actually buy it for a 4 hour DVD.

Wire, if you subscribe, but most of the music won't be up your alley, so don't expend money.

A lot of year-end issues have CD's -- Q, Kerrrang, what's that alt-metal one, Road Show? No, that's that Japanese magazine with all the pretty pictures...Rock Sound! You'd like that one, methinks.

Paste is pretty good for music. But some of their articles really suck.

I'll usually pick up Uncut whenever they have the tribute CDs. I find their tribute CDs to be better than most commercially available tribute albums. Otherwise, I may pick up, at most, one issue a year.

I picked up the recent issues of Mojo that had the tribute albums. Their 2 CD Beatles tribute was pretty meh, but the Johnny Cash one was pretty good (despite all of the errors in the liner notes).

Esopus http://www.esopusmag.com comes with a CD of exclusive tracks. It only comes out twice a year. Esopus is a little pricey at $10, but it's a good coffee table size book. The magazine is mainly an art magazine, so there's not as much music content as the other magazines listed. The latest issue (#3) does have an interview with the Wrens. Anyone know where I can find the first two issues?

NME ocassionally has a CD. Recently, they had a CD full of live performances from XFM.

For my money, the best magazine with a CD is the UK magazine Comes With A Smile http://www.comeswithasmile.com. The magazine comes out sporadically, but it's well worth it. The interviews are top-notch. The CDs are almost entirely rare and exclusive tracks. I've never seen the magazine on the stands in the US. I picked up a few issues via mail order and I now subscribe to it. Back issues are pretty scarce and I'm still trying to complete my collection.

Paste, as previously mentioned comes with a CD and subscribers will soon be getting a CD and a DVD with every issue.

Ladies and Gentlemen http://www.lagmag.com comes with 12" vinyl, but they've only have one issue out. The Aesthetic Apparatus guys help put it out.

Stop Smiling http://www.stopsmilingonline.com comes with (and without) a limited edition 7".
