So i'm invited to dinner with my dad's boss and his wife, among other employees (the company loves family and encourages family to go to shit like this). Dad's boss is a very wealthy dude, but doesn't even compare to his wife.

This woman is rich. Her dad basically invented modern cement, so she doesn't exactly have it hard (her net worth is about half a bil). Let's just say, she'd easily be able to handle that huge bar tab i rang up, between pricey beers and the champagne that she brought by the case load to the restaurant because she didn't trust their stock (this stuff made Bollinger seem like Coca Cola).

So i get talking to this woman, and she says she was just at 'some music festival' in the US called Coachella..."I don't know if you've heard of it". Then we get talking more and more and in July she's heading to that festival in Valencia 'cause she's an MC5 fan from way back when. She loves Depeche Mode, the Strokes, Radiohead, and all that shit, and her 12 year old son is in a band with the son of the singer from UK Squeeze. Shit freaked me out.

Weird...i didn't know many rich people had 'indie cred'.

I never thought i would be able to hold a lengthy legitimate conversation with one of the richest people in Australia...

I know rich people generally have finer taste in art and music, but not normally this sort of music?

These people go to literally every festival. They just globetrot around the world: Glastonbury, SXSW, Spendour in the Grass, Coachella, Roskilde, Big Day Out. Private fricken' jets all the way.

Anyone that says money can't buy happiness doesn't fucking have any.

i'm not surprised that certain wealthy people have good taste in music, or at least that they like something that peons like us would also like. what does this woman do? it doesn't seem like she has to work, so she collects interests and music happens to be one of them. it must be nice.

I didn't want to get into specifics, but he ACTUALLY invented an additive and new formula which is used in every bag of cement in the world. It makes it cure properly and not crack.

Quote:
...had established in 1963 with his father and another partner a fly ash business. Fly ash is a light, powdery substance, also known as pozzolan, which is a by-product of coal burnt in power stations. When blended with cement, fly ash adds strength and durability to concrete and reduces its cost. The business successfully developed the process for the use of fly ash in structural concrete...

i was at a party with some rich people and this old lady (like 75) said her grandson is in some band with a guy called Steve Malmus or some weird mispronunciation but I figured out it was Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.

I was wondering if it was the guy who developed the use of fiber (which reduces/eliminates the need for steel reinforcement) in concrete but you answered my question with the fly ash thing. Entrestin'

She also mentioned how their parents basically have been supporting them until very recently.

Actually from my experience, many rich people are indie cred. Of all the bands I know---the Dears, the Stars, Metric, BBS, Sam Roberts, High Dials---only one of them does not (as far as I know) include at least one set, or various sets, of rich parents in the equation.

one of my favorite games to play at shows is "spot the rich kid(s) in the band." it's sometimes tricky, but that just adds to the competition.

Heh. I mean, don't get me wrong, (most) of them are really sweet people. It's just funny when you find out how some musicians manage such a 'vagabond' lifestyle.

Thank you for recognizing this. I thought I was going to be the only one. Even despite your grumpiness, you overcome it ever so rarely with hints of a sense of humor. :)

thats the beauty of music....for the most part - its money blind

its more or less - you have people that listen to swill and people that listen to good music.

the word here is PEOPLE, not rich, not poor but PEOPLE.
