I know there's a few of you on here other than me.

I'm shopping for a new glove today at lunch, and honestly the whole process scares me. I hate the thought of having to break a new glove in, but it's time I take the plunge because my old glove has had it. I haven't bought a new glove since I was in high school, so what should I be looking for? I play mostly outfield, but move around and play wherever I'm needed quite a bit as well.

What can you recommend for under $100?

my friend Ed busted his finger trying to catch a 16" ball and he's had two surgerys since then.

Look for one with soft leather. If your mostly an outfielder than get and outfielders mit. I got a nice black Nike glove a few years ago and it's been good.

Make sure you have a softball, glove oil and something to tie around the glove.

i have friends who run over their gloves to help break in and i've also heard of using shaving cream and the oven to break them in. I just use lots of oil. If you apply it in a sexy way the glove will really respond.

Sweet. I just played a triple-header on Tuesday and had one of the best nights I've had in a LONG time. For the night I had a double, two triples AND an in-the-park homerun. Freakin' sweet!

i had my little leaguers oil their mitts, put a few baseballs in it and rubberband or tie it shut. for fun i told them to sleep with it but that's really not necessary.

Use olive oil to break it in. I have had great success with it. I have a feeling it shortens the life of the glove, but you can have it in pretty broken in shape in a couple weeks.

Is there a brand you prefer?

Rawlings, Spalding...

As a guitar player that is why I no longer play 16" ball.
But that said, it is a much better game than 12".
•The pitcher can dance around the mound
•Big arcs on the pitches -- and it's a lot harder to hit than you'd think
•No stinkin' gloves

when i moved to chicago, i was like wtf, but it is a lot more fun to play. There is no sharing of gloves with girls from the other team and crap like that

It also doesn't hurt as much when it bounces off your face. It's more like catching a football with your body than a baseball.

Just go with a name brand that you know: Louisville/TPS, Mizuno, or other. Make sure to try many different gloves until you find your fit. Don't be afraid to throw around in the store.

I played hardball as a kid, at shortstop, so I can't shake the small glove even though I play softball now. My team is stacked this year. We should win it all. After one game and multiple rainouts, I'm batting .800.

16" was great for a lot of things.
i grew up in a not so wealthy neighborhood and all we needed was one ball and a bat or two. we'd play on the corner using the four corner sewers as bases.
so much for my poptodd walk down memory lane.

It's a Chicago thing. (Sort of like duck pin bowling is to Baltimore)
Basically it's like a 16" ragball instead of the 12" softball, so you don't need a glove.

i got in some trouble last year when i pitched in a 16" league because i was throwing more like i would in a 12" league. i had no idea. now i'm working on a better arc. then again, we use old style cans as the bases and people smoke at-bat, so it's not really serious.

I own that very ball, purchased from www.justballs.com
I had it shipped to the office, and the receptionist was a little skeptical when he brought it to my desk.

I've always had Rawlings my whole life. That's actually one of the reasons I was asking..there's so many brands now that offer such a wide range. Wasn't sure if there was one superior to others.

Nokonas look freakin' awesome but I'm not dropping that much on a glove.
