i did this at the beginning of may and was totally out of it for about a week. people weren't recognizing me, i didn't recognize myself in mirrors, etc. but i don't think i'll grow it back until the winter. there's no way i can deal with heat when i have a beard.

It depends on the individual, but if I didn't shave for a week, I'd look like a completely different person. Most men need to shave every 1-2 days to keep a relatively clean-cut look.

Yeah but there's a really crappy period (weeks 2 - 3, for me) between the stubble stage and the full beard stage when it looks fucking shitty.

No shit. I'd be looking mighty fine. I always keep mine pretty tight, I've never had the patience for that ratty, hobo period before it starts to look sharp.
