got my stash from secondspin last night... I guess I was kinda surprised it came in such a small box, but upon opening it, found they don't send jewel cases. Fine by me.

So I've already listened to Afghan Whigs "What Jail is Like." I've got some heavy-duty listening to do!

for those of you who aren't aware, ayah, billy and e-stone helped me spend an $85 credit on secondspin.com. I bought the following based on their expert recommendations:

love - forever changes
neil young - everybody knows this is nowhere
afghan whigs - what jail is like
carole king - tapestry
the smiths - hatful of hollow
afghan whigs - black love
sonic youth - murray street
jules shear - the great puzzle
echo and the b-men - ocean rain
elvis costello - my aim is true
donny hathaway - extension of a man
joy division - unknown pleasures

That seems way heavy on the Afghan Whigs. But at least you'll KNOW you hate them.

So far, not so. Actually, I think I'm a Dulli convert after seeing Twilight Singers last week.
edit: besides, the early 90s were a "dark period" for me, as I didn't really hear or seek out a lot of new stuff then.

Rads doesn't like rock mixed with soul and r&b...does not compute

Nice.

Those Elvis Costello and Neil Young albums are on my listmania 100. Great, great albums.

That Joy Division album has my fave JD song "She's Lost Control". Ridiculously cold, and dark album. Claustrophobic even.

"Murray St" is probably the best latter period SY albums. (at least according to the latest Obner poll)

Oh I appreciate what Dulli is trying to do - I just don't think he does it.

I've bought every Whigs album - mostly because reviews for each promised that this time Dulli got it right AND because the Whigs always seemed so close to the brass ring - and I've ended up selling all of them.

I'm guessing that you haven't seen him live and that he'd click for you if you did. I was only a casual fan before the first show. Love all the afghan whigs albums now. I think we've even had this conversation before.

The What Jail's Like ep is a live one so if you were inclined at all to give them a second chance that would be the one to go with.

so I've made it through the two Elvis discs, and Joy Division (proper listens, mind you, not my usual scattered listen to a song here and a song there).

Now I'm listening to Jules Shear. I sometimes wonder where the hell my head was at when this stuff came out originally. (Radcliffe, you are not allowed to answer that rhetorical question) ;)
