Guess I need to see more movies because I haven't even heard of a lot of these. Liked #'s 1 and 2 though.

'osama' at 91? with 'spiderman 2' and 'brown bunny' rated higher?
that's just fucking stupid.
'osama' isn't just one of the best movies i saw last year, it was one of the best i've ever seen, period. cinematically gorgeous and thoroughly engaging.
but then again, it doesnt have a bunch of cgi effects and kirsten dunst's tits, or vincent gallo getting an on screen blowjob, so what the hell do i know.

It's amazing how many films open in New York and L.A., but nowhere else! I read reviews in 4 Toronto newspapers and online, but there were some films I had never heard of. Weird. Interesting lists, though.

Rules of the Game

We asked each critic to cite 10 films, five lead performances, five supporting performances, 10 films without distributors, and one choice each for director, screenplay, cinematography, documentary, and first feature. As usual, participants were drawn mostly from alternative weeklies, online publications, and film journals (several Voice alumni were also invited). Each film and performance in an unranked ballot received 10 points. Ranked ballots were weighted as follows: For film 1 (15 points), 2 (14), 3 (13), 4 (12), 5 (11), 6 (9), 7 (8), 8 (7), 9 (6), 10 (5). For performance 1 (14), 2 (12), 3 (10), 4 (8), 5 (6). (Ties were allowed, and computed accordingly, hence the occasional ungainly decimal point.) We asked our voters to focus on films that opened for a U.S. theatrical engagement in 2004. Films that received votes in previous years (because of release-pattern differences) had points carried over if they scored at least as many points this year as in any earlier year. For performances that received votes in both lead and supporting, we shifted the points to the more popular category. We allowed splits in one-choice categories like director and screenplay.

The IMAX version of The Polar Express wasn't as good as the normal version? Bummer.

So if I just recently saw the first one and hated it, mostly because of Ethan Hawke, would there be any chance in hell I would like this one?? I don't really get the critical love for this movie. Ethan Hawke? Holy jesus is there an actor out there these days who seems more contrived than him?
