Made some movies including:

Kids
Gummo
Julien Donkey-Boy

and others, I presume.

I haven't seen a single one. My friend raves about them and says he's her favorite director ever. My old manager at the first record store, who was a huge movie buff, said he was a pretentious hack.

They don't sound like something I'd like but I can't say until I actually see one of them.

I've only seen Gummo and it was pretty much a piece of shit.

very out-of-the-box director. i enjoy everything he's done, even if if it's strictly for shock value.

Gummo - bathtub/retarded prostitute/huffing scenes are very real
Image

Julien Donkey Boy - cinematography/the wedding dress

Ken Park - the masturbation/door scene/various sex scenes
Image

Kids - only for Chloe

Yup.

For the record, Kids was written by Korine but directed by Larry Clark.

I think Harmony Korine--the writer--is worthwhile. His directing is, meh, kinda flat. His stories though tend to be on the scarily real level, and unfortunately that scares many people away, or causes them to be so shocked they completely lose the subject at hand. His writing on Kids was brilliant. Should've been at least nom'd for his screenplay. The film is so poignant that every kid should have to watch it in h.s.

Gummo, was odd, and I've only seen it once. I know once again that I was crazily in love with the characters in this odd little town hit by disaster. Think NO wasn't like that? Come on. The crazies come out when they have no place to go.

JDB was an experiment. Let's set that one up on the table. It was a Dogme 95 experiment, that completely suceeded. I feel that he did this just to be part of something since his other films and personality left him so isolated. Good film, once again excellent characters.

This topic is kinda funny, since I was going to buy both Gummo and JDB on DVD, since I have neither.

Oh, and Korine has also written a couple of books. His late show appearances are hilarious as well. Though he was probably on drugs.

agreed. a lot of people don't like korine because of that... but i loved kids and gummo - gummo the first time around was odd for me but then after watching it a second time, i really liked it.

haven't seen donkey boy yet though.

I haven't seen any of these since at least three or four years ago, but....

Kids - I liked this a lot. Some people hate it but it seemed pretty realistic to me.

Ken Park - I think I liked this but I only saw it once so I can't say for sure. I do like Larry Clark though. The only scene that sticks out in my mind is the one that Dalen posted. I remember that kid telling his girlfriend that she tasted like her mom.

Gummo - For every one person that likes this there will be ten that despise it, but I guess I'm that one person. It's not groundbreaking but it's an interesting view of a world that most people will never see or be involved in whatsoever.

Julien Donkey Boy - I've only seen the first ten minutes so I can't comment.

Kids is probably the worst movie that i've ever seen other than gummo. You can usually tell who's going to defend these terrible movies from a mile away. Trust your instincts.

edit- i take that back, in the interest of fairness: Lost in Translation, Kids, Gummo.

My instincts, most of the time, would be to kick you in the nuts. If I ever met you, it'd be really hard to resist.

I like about 3/4 of Gummo a lot. There are some missteps (Korine's scene with the midget being the biggest one IMO), but it's generally a fractured and scatterchot film by nature. It has some of the most compelling audio/visual combinations of any movie I've ever seen.

I can't remember much JDB because I haven't seen it since college. I remember it being good, especially Ewen Bremner's (sp?) performance, but very hard to watch. Partly for the grainy, handheld digital camera footage and partly for the subject matter.

I haven't seen Kids since I was 16 or 17 so I really can't comment on that one. I don't think I've seen any other Larry Clark movies, and I didn't realize Korine had any part in Ken Park.

i've seen kids so many times because i used to hang out at someone's house where it seemed to play on a loop for one summer in high school. i guess it's alright. i haven't seen the others because i've either heard bad things or no things about them.

I've seen them all, but Ken Park.
Julien Donkey Boy was probably my fave, due it being exceedingly disturbing and fairly well acted.
Gummo was entertaining, but horrendous. I wouldn't watch it again if I had the chance.
Kids was decent for various parts, but nothing outstanding. Leo Fitzpatrick who was one of the stars is friends with Omaha skateboarder/director Steve Berra, and has been in town quite a few times.

that's pretty much it right there. he doesn't actually have any command of plot or character or really anything traditionally associated with telling a story, it's just mildly fucked up characters -- generally framed as products of their environments, so they're not even responsible for their generally pedestrian fucked-uped-ness -- doing mildly boring shit. at the end of each movie, you don't usually care anything for any of his characters, save for a half-minded idea that some would probably be catching bullets in a desert. I find that the people that feign defense of his movies are usually either fans of those youtube clips of people falling down stairs or people struggling to find something they consider "real", and how they find that in these tritely scripted movies is beyond me. And drinky, swing away my man, swing away i guess.

although the subtext that i think that everyone, ever, is stupid could apply here as well.

is everyone on the board gonna fight today?

and while Kids was watchable, Gummo was a complete hunk of peanut-riddled shit.

Well, you really nailed it, man. Gummo is, in fact, not a traditional narrative, and was probably loosely scripted to say the least. You know, there are other reasons for making a film other than directly telling some profound, moving story.

It's more of an *art* film in several senses. A lot of its concerns are formal and aesthetic, as much about juxtapositions of sound and image as it about the lives of its subjects.

Initially, I did find it shocking and somewhat disturbing. At the time, I was struck by how much it affected me. That doesn't mean that I embrace everything that drags its audience through the shit (I hate Todd Solondz movies, for instance), but I've always held on to a certain respect for the impact that this movie had on me. I do think that there's a heart and something of a story underneath the shock value and the pretense, but I don't really think it's anything profound. I just enjoy it for the things it does well.

Then again, I don't make a point of hating 90% of the things that other people like.

i'd really like to see you back this up- i like at least as much terrible shit as the rest of you dumbasses, although it's possible that i've hated more things that you like than most people. i don't really know your tastes well enough to say.
