My wife just offered to buy me a CD for every week that I don't drop the word fuck into casual conversation. The kicker is once a week she's going to ask me if I used the word. I don't lie to my wife, so this could be interesting, especially since I'm not big on losing bets.

Been trying to clean up my language, since I'd rather not have easy profanities to fall back on that deaden productive vocabulary and possibly get my kids cursing.

Silly? Not?

Hey. Hmm. Considering the life applications of this truism.

I've never understood the problems people have with cursing. They're just words, fer Gawds sake.

Not calling you out, Spoon. Just the way I feel in general.

hmmm...10-20 bucks for a cd versus the pleasure obtained from a week's worth of f-bombs.
that's a tough one.
does the money for the cd come from a joint account? cos if it does, you may as well just buy the thing yrself and make sure you dont drop the f-bomb in front of the kids.
which is hard b/c i know for me, i'm usually hurling it at them specifically.
and i dont even have kids of my own.

No. But she's all about sensual talk, not dirty talk anyway.

She's "erotic," not "totally tasteless video presents cumslop 37"

Even if you aren't bothered by cursing (Personally i think a well placed curse word is one of the most effective uses of langauge known to man), it is always fun to test your will. Plus you get free CDs out of it. I say do it.

I don't have any moral problem with swearing. It's more feeling like my vocabulary is being sullied up with easy crutch words.

On here, I often use dumbass words, phrases and regionalisms because I'm being smarmy. But in real life I prefer speaking well.

I love your marriage.

One question: Do people swear a lot in your workplace? Radio rock guys, etc.
I used to swear a lot more than I do now. I attribute it to the fact that in Montreal my main "colleagues" were rock 'n roll boys and now I work in an office where that just wouldn't fly. I guess Senor Six and I both swear now and then... (like when one of our neighbours last night decided to start performing songs from the "Little Mermaid" at full volume on their front porch at 1:30AM)... but I guess it's different when you've got kids.

Either way it's up to you. If it's all coming from your wife it might be hard to do. If it's your decision but your wife is helping out by providing some motivation then it could probably work.

My $0.02.

:)

That's wicked. I would actually like to own that.

Speaking of work-appropriate conversation... I ended up getting into a giggley conversation with an editor at work yesterday. She has made a "wall of shame" of various things that have appeared in courses that could be taken with double meanings.

e.g. "Marcy invited 8 friends over for a birthday party. Her mother served cake. She cut them up into little pieces." Something like that.

I was telling her how I recently lent my French friend Neko Case's Blacklisted and was trying to explain to her the joke behind the word "Beaver" on the CD.

Business-speak is the WORST for this kind of thing. My friend and I used to get into the worst giggle fits at the company we used to work for... they'd send out company "briefs" that would be all about "thrusting our efforts into this direction in order to penetrate such and such market". I am still in disbelief that people use the expression "debrief" in serious conversation.

I guess with the proper reinforcement, you could modify nearly any behaviour you wanted. It's just got to be meaningful enough to promote the change. Myself, it would take more than cds to drop that behaviour. I thinking some Clockwork Orange type scenario might possibly do the trick, but even then I couldn't be sure.

In a sentence: After watching that Shakira video, I realized I had moisted all over the couch.
