So, Im off to Texas tomorrow.

With a bit of time to kill in between the convention , meetings, and mexican food.

I did a search on recordstorereview.com, and found several stores which may interest me.

Ok, Austin contigent, are any of these any good, and am i missing any? Basivally, I want stores that primarily do rock, indie rock, metal, but all genres represented....

Cheapo's Disc - 914 N Lamar
Encore - 8820 Burnett Rd
33 Degree's - 4017 Guadalupe
Waterloo - 600 N Lamar

will these make me happy and my credit card sad?
and whats the deal withthe magical 6th street i hear about? im not really a big drinker, so bars dont impress me.

Friday night, I think i am down for Unknown Hinson at the Continental. Sat night, I am open as of now....Chuck?

Waterloo = amazing store

6th Street always was the best place to catch music, but I haven't been to Austin in about 7 years, so things may have changed.

Waterloo and End Of An Ear are the two best indie stores in Austin. Simple enough. I wouldn't waste time elsewhere.

33 Degrees was my joint, but it's no longer there. Crying shame since their staff was much more grounded AND knowledgable than Waterloo's. Waterloo has a decent selection of used vinyl and an even better selection of overpriced vinyl. Don't count out the Used Books & Music chain - there might be five or six different stores, and they've an unbelievable amount of hidden treasures in the used bins. Cheapo also for used bins, natch.

Sorry. It's Half-Price Books & Music. I think the S. Lamar location is closest to the convention center:

2929 South Lamar Blvd.
Austin, TX 78704-4784

cheapo's and waterloo are close to eachother and near the convention center. It would be difficult to get lost if you visit them.

The one on burnett I've never been to but that is pretty far away on the north side of town (the convention center is on the south side).

Waterloo is a good record store and certainly the best in Austin atm. It's a damn shame that 33 degrees is no more. I have lots of fond memories of that place.

Yeah half price is solid too. There are several of them. The main one is on North Lamar but further north than waterloo. There's also one on the southside on South Lamar. The North Lamar one is bigger but sometimes I had better luck at the south one as fewer people go there.

Oh and if you haven't gotten your mexican food planned out I recommend Polvo's which is on south first near the convention center. Their fish fajitas kick ass. Guerro's is also decent plus it's on south congress which is a cool part of town to visit, lots of neat shops and stuff.

For bars, Lovejoy's and Casino el Camino are fun. Gingerman and Opal Divine's are good if you're a beer snob. Freddie's has a great outdoor area where you can play washers and (sometimes) get free barbecue.

There's also Planet Replay. They sell used stuff. Only problem is they do their research. Don't expect to get a bargain on rare stuff. But you might get a bargain on other things.

Yeah Waterloo's was pretty awesome. Too bad I didn't have any money because I would've bought a shit-ton of stuff.

Oh and go to The Jackalope. It was probably my favorite bar when I was in Austin.

What with the pretentious 80s-minded DJs and such. Am I thinking of the right place? I was about a 12-pack into the night at that point.

Yeah I always hated the jackalope and could never understand why friends seemed to love it. Unless you're chasing skirts, there are much better bars.

I bought a 16 Horsepower double DVD at Waterloo today. When I opened it, the DVDs were in mint condition, but the inner part of the package appeared to have been mangled. I'm taking it back on Saturday. Sucks though, cause it's not a half bad DVD. And there's a live Joy Division cover of "Heart and Soul" that's pretty well done.

I don't really remember there being DJs there. But I was drunk everytime I was there so who knows?

They had 2 kinds of 16 HP DVDs. The one that I bought was the last one they had of it. But I'm returning it anyway because I can just buy it from here: http://www.smoochrecords.com/store.html

I think I'll exchange it for the other live DVD they have.
