If I recall, the first appearance of this gag was shortly after 9/11 when there was a lot of talk about "how are we supposed to be funny now?" Everyone was saying irony was dead.

In retrospect, it was so easy: just talk about balls!

The "Schwetty Balls" sketch first ran on an episode of SNL shortly before Christmas 1998.

I showed remarkable restraint not being the first person to respond to a Monty's Sweaty Balls thread. Probably won't happen again, but I'm proud anyway.
