So you're looking for a couple Rush albums? Which ones?

I was all set to make a funny Rush reference, based on the thread title...until I found out the thread actually IS about the Rush album!

FOILED AGAIN!!!

Seriously, though, that was one of the seminal records of my youth. "Red Barchetta" is, like, poetry.

i'm thinking maybe farewell to kings and hemispheres. the album after moving pictures, power windows, isn'tone of their best and i want to steer clear of the first couple albums from the early 70's.

funny, though, i just realize that their first album came out the year i was born

i'm telling, man, side b! i actually revisited moving pictures because the chorus from daft punk's television rules the nation reminded me of the "thick" power chords from the the beginning of camera eye

I love this album.

Actually, Rush needs no fucking apologies guys. Ever try to do an air "pretend" Neil Peart drum solo with any sense of accomplishment or imitation? You can't do it, can you?

Of course you fucking can't. He's incredible.

Specific Rush songs = awesome

Other specific Rush songs = tuneless exercises in technical wankery, desperately in need of back-up vocals/harmonies, filled with some of the most self-serious lyrics ever penned.

But I still listen to 'em sometimes.

Actually, Grace Under Pressure came after Moving Pictures and before Power Windows. You need Permanent Waves, which came right before Moving Pictures.

Oh, and P'Shaw's assessment of Rush is pretty spot-on.

[smarmy]Though on a scale of 1-10 on the Rush vs. Five For Fighting scale, Rush get a 10[/smarm]

Ditto. I was gonna reference this song in my original post, but didn't.

No, but I can sing "YYZ"... in fact a friend and I recently randomly lapsed into it... we got surprizingly far.

<---grew up with a Rush-obsessed drummer brother.

<--- knows that "YYZ" is the airport code for Toronto.
<--- knows that the rhythm played out in that song is in fact "YYZ" in morse code.

My vote for fav Rush song = "Cygnus X-1".
It is wicked and is also the ultimate nerd song. I mean it's about a frickin' black hole!

Quote:
In the constellation of Cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
The Black Hole
Of Cygnus X-1

Six Stars of the Northern Cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night....

1
Invisible
To telescopic eye
Infinity
The star that would not die

All who dare
To cross her course
Are swallowed by
A fearsome force

Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized ---- at the core
Or through the Astral Door ----
To soar....

2
I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way

On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the Black Hole ----
Gains control....

3
Spinning, whirling,
Still descending
Like a spiral sea,
Unending

Sound and fury
Drowns my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart....

OMG. That first part is sooooooooooo "Stonehenge"!!

Quote:
In ancient times, hundreds of years before the
dawn of history.
There lived a strange race of people...the Druids.
No one knows who they were, or what they were doing...
but their legacy remains...
hewn into the living rock of Stonehenge...

Totally unapologetic, die-hard Rush fan here. Given the unbelievable bullshit, totally unbelievable absolute turds that half of obner listens to most of the time, a slam on Rush is completely meaningless. I mean, when someone who takes seriously Bright Eyes, Antony & The Johnsons, or the fucking Liars actually levels criticism at Rush, it's pretty easy to write anything they say off. There's a LOT worse vocalists than Geddy among the regularly listened-to crap that Obner collectively shits itself over.

Rush is hardly "prog rock," going by the standard, accepted definition of prog rock as stuff like old Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc. Rush is progressive, yes, but "prog rock"? No. They dropped the long song-forms and multiple time-sigs two decades ago (uh, like 1978, basically) - time to let go of this notion of them as a prog-rock band, people.

As for the music, from Hemispheres on, they had a great string of albums up to Hold Your Fire, which, while I enjoy it, is just not one of my favorites. You can dis the more overlooked 80s albums all you want, but Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Power Windows are some of my and other fans' favorites, with GUP admittedly having a very weak spot ("Body Electric," anyone?) After that, it's a mixed bag - Presto is absolutely one of my favorite albums of all time - it is nearly perfect, as is Counterparts and Vapor Trails (aside from the horrible mix/mastering) but Roll The Bones and Test For Echo are kinda weak. And Rush through A Farewell To Kings? My least favorite period, period - I hardly ever listen to this stuff, and if I do, it's for individual songs on each album. I mean, really, who can actually sit through all of the self-titled album? Come on, "Take A Friend"? But I have to admit that "Working Man" and "Finding My Way" kick ass to this day.

I think the Obner potshots at Rush are childish - they should be outlawed like taking shots at the Stones are practically verboten here, and the Stones are a hell of a lot more deserving of ridicule, IMO. At least Rush continues to work their asses off to put out some semblance of good music before every tour - the Stones don't get off just for one decent album in over two decades. Rush deserves some decent credit and respect - they've managed to not only reinvent themselves several times, they've done it without selling out nor by utterly destroying their legacy, unlike very few others.
