Didn't Capitol have money on Matador, in the first, mid-nineties hay-day of that label? I thought there was a distribution deal, at least.... Part of the reason that Liz Phair moved so seamlessly, business-end, from Mat to Cap.

So, maybe it's still just a feeder for the big guy, huh?

I'm not really surprised by this, I just thought they might do it earlier. I really like Interpol, but I can see where their sound and image would easily translate into moderate commercial success.
With groups like Death Cab for Cutie, Decemberist and Rilo Kiley signing to a major too, our taste might be quite commercial real soon.

I was hoping Interpol would slide the other way on their third record. Return to the dark textures of the first record and limit the vocals for a more post-rock post-punk experience. Don't look likely now though.

no i just heard rumors that interpol was signing to capitol but didn't say anything until i saw that article on pitchfork then whatever...

yeah the decemberists just signed to capitol so the release of their next album, the crane wife, is due in october. and it actually is REALLY good.

as far as morningwood goes, do not even get me started. i fucking hate that band.

and matador isn't distributed by emi/capitol.

The last thing we needed was for Interpol to get major label backing.

Prediction: This rekkid will be a breakthrough, huge and awesome (ala Modest Mouse's last) therefore, 79% of the Obnish will loathe it.

I'm pretty sure that was Atlantic.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this, but I am sure that I'd like the next album to be more TOTBL and less Antics.

same here, but since i work for the evils, it's exciting to actually have a band you like sign on.

i'm just really curious how the next album will sound.

In 1994, the label had a partnership with Atlantic Records which lasted for a couple of years. Then in 1996, Capitol Records purchased a 49 percent stake in Matador, but Lombardi and Cosloy bought it back in 1999. It has been co-owned by the Beggars Group since 2002 and now operates in both New York and London. (from wiki)

Wowee Zowee was originally a Matador/Atlantic release in '95 and so on...

I liked a few tunes off of Antics (really liked "evil" a bunch), still prefer the first half of Turn on the Bright Lights to anything else they've done, and am looking forward to the new stuff.
