During a broadcast of the Dr. Who episode "Horror of Fang Rock" on WTTW Chicago Channel 11, on Sunday November 22nd, 1987, at around 11:15pm, a Video "Pirate" wearing a Max Headroom mask broke into the signal and transmitted one of the weirdest, unauthorized things ever to hit the Chicago airwaves.

God, I so remember this. I think he was a disgruntled ex-WGN employee if I recall correctly.

Check that... he broke into WGNs airwaves earlier that night.

The thing that is amazing is not that it happened, but that someone had actually stayed awake thru the first 15 minutes of Dr. Who to record it at 11:15. Bravo

Or they set the VCR since they were too busy "DMing". Imagine that trip. Waking up from an all night binge of Dungeons & Dragons, pizza, Snickers & Tab cola some guy or girl ((shudder))) decides to rewind the tape as the Pop Tarts warm, 15 minutes later see's DAT Headroom. Puts 20 sided dice in it's fucking place.

Was Mark Clark even alive when this happened?

Back in Chicago during high school I was a big Dr. Who fan so I used to stay up late to watch it. It's funny that I remember this.

There was a scene where a guy in a mask paddles someone's bare ass...

edit: Oh cool. There's a youtube link. I get to relive this AGAIN!

Man, that was weird.

Not really like how I originally remembered it but that was like, 20 years ago. Ah, memories.

Anyone remember weekend afternoon Son Of Svengoolie shows????

That is beyond description. I was only 6 at the time, so I've never even heard of Dr. Who, let alone this.

I do remember Svengoolie, though! I hated that crap and always flipped it immediately. I liked him as the host of the Three Stooges replays though.

I think I may have seen this the night it aired.
There was a spell there in the late-80's when there were a spate of pirate station interruptions (maybe the same guy?). But yeah, it was weird and cool.
