I wonder if a secondary infraction like this could cost the players involved to miss a game. Usually you can spread the suspensions around so they don't hurt you too bad in a game, but I would like to know who was doing the promo clips and if they are anyone huge on that team.

It is in this incidence, last year with Leinart I thought he should have known better, but ESPN bailed him and USC out. I don't blame them, they had been hyping USC all year as the greatest team ever going for three titles in a row.
I personally don't see anything wrong with promoting a local sports show that deals with your team, but again these rules have been on the books for years and it makes a program look ignorant and arrogant when they break them.

Yeah, TJ's right. I mean, I could understand if they were PAID for these, but there were almost certainly just quick comments made in passing and captured for posterity by the local station.

If anything, this proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that my beloved Irish are back and everyone else fears them as a serious threat. There wasn't any whistleblowing going on back when they sucked...

the NCAA needs to scrap all of their rules and start fresh...I don't think even they know all of the rules they have on the books and it seems pretty damn easy to commit violations without even realizing it

my dad is on the DII rules/regulations committee and he gets a book with updates pretty often. i wouldn't be surprised if it's once a month. if the ncaa cracked down on absolutely every tiny infraction, no school could field a whole team, except for, like, women's golf.

They do crackdown quite a bit, but most programs are able to self-penalize themselves after doing an investigation. The NCAA only steps in when they feel like they need to independently investigate or don't feel the punishment was severe enough.
With Notre Dame, you have a team that is consistently in the public eye and has a unique position in the NCAA, especially when it comes to College Football. Had this happened at nearby Indiana or Purdue, you probably wouldn't have heard anything unless you were a fan.
This is where I am in agreement with FT. Notre Dame is one of the four/five high profile football teams this year, and when they reported a possible infraction, the media in that area took off with this. The only reason the NCAA will suspend anyone now is due to media scrutiny.
With that said, I heard one of the players in question is the only guy in the defensive backfield that could tackle last year according to ND fans.

Notre Dame has been cleared, nobody did anything intentional, it was all inadvertent. They never did list who the three athletes were, which from the early articles seems like a really small number of people involved in the promos.

If they do this year, hopefully they don't win it the cheap way like they did the 2002.
