Have a new record coming out Tuesday, according to the Times. I totally missed that. Apparently it's a return to Kiko and Colossal Head type coolness. This makes me happy. Todd?

Yeah. Also check out their site at www.loslobos.org

they have some production/recording podcasts that look pretty cool.

I like 'em allright, but I never really liked any subsequent records as much as Will the Wolf Survive. I really liked that one a lot, but it was a bit of a downword slide from there to me. Not sure why, really.

Anybody else dig the Latin Playboys, side project from David Hidalgo and Louie Perez?

They take risks there that would never make it to a Los Lobos album. Listen to Dose if you haven't.

Have it.
Love it.
Although Kiko is still the apex for me.
Arguably the best album of the 1990's.

I think they kept getting more and more interesting after Wolf. The last couple have been solid, but less experimental. The clips on this one sound really promising. Cool art direction, too.

The Latin Playboys stuff is also great.

Good grief. I'm finally listening to this and I want to keep playing "Little Things" over and over and over and over again. What a great song. Almost sounds like a Steve Winwood tune.

EDIT for Uncle Grumpystilskins: the vocals sound a little Winwood-ish.

Don't those two sentences cancel each other out?

That is a great song. And I can understand - in theory - why Steve Winwood could be good. I think they made a reference to stealing a bit of Procol Harum on that one, though. The organ is a nice nod. This record is in my top ten of 06.

I saw that they have a tour in the works, but it's an acoustic-playing-a-lot-of-Mexican-folkloric-songs deal. That alright, but nothing beats the wolves in rock mode - like Harry could affirm. Kind of a weird way to promote a record which is a sideways return to the spooky Kiko aesthetic. Anyway, the record is worth a listen if you haven't been into Los Lobos' more standard rock approach of the last couple albums. There are some neat video podcasts on their site about the making of the record, too.

I saw them last Saturday with Calexico opening (Calexico was better than I've ever seen them).

They did most of the new album (which is in my top 10, best in over ten years from them).

They are America's best rock and roll band, and still sound like they are in the garage having fun... new drummer is Hidalgo's son and it was great seeing them interact... he'd count for the kid, who was 18 and awesome.

I first knew them as an acoustic "chicano power" roots band from Garfield High School in East Los, they were known as Los Lobos del Este and they mostly did acoustic Mexican folk and traditional songs, corridos, etc. That's kinda what this next tour is about.

I am probably the only one on this board who thinks this (although I am right)... greatest American Rock and Roll Band.

I don't know if I could claim one band as the greatest, but they are under-appreciated, that's for sure. Amazing that a band this far into a career - intact, even - can keep making smart, artistically adventurous choices.
