So what are some good modern waltzes:

The Beatles "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"
Neil Young "Only Love Can Break A Heart"
Oscar The Grouch "I Love Trash"

There must be more...

I just sang a few of their songs in my head, and they weren't waltzes, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have some. I know Bright Eyes has at least one, but I can't think of what it is now.

I don't even know the definition of waltz as it applies to a song.

I only know of the definition as the dance.

Basically, three beats per measure instead of the usual four.

Elliott Smith had that "waltz" song. I'll edit when I remember the name. That's a gorgeous song.

edit! "Waltz #2 (XO)" from XO

We Are Nowhere And It's Now? Or is that in 6/8? I can never tell.

it's like a waltz in 15/8 time, but yeah :)

here's a few (although to be fair a lot of them are in 6/8 which isn't technically a waltz, but...)

weezer - holiday
pink floyd - eclipse
linus of hollywood - say hello to another goodbye
built to spill - velvet waltz, untrustable, you were right
jeremy enigk - abigail ann
clem snide - joan jett of arc
modest mouse - sleepwalking
ween - baby bitch (thanks for the recommendation earlier yali)
neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea
guided by voices - watch me jumpstart
quasi - you fucked yourself
they might be giants - where your eyes don't go
smart went crazy - it was a good day
tom waits - house where nobody lives
best of all: jimmy hendrix - manic fucking depression.

So basically, I have to play or understand music to recognize one?

I usually never notice a song is a waltz until somebody points it out, and then I think "Oh, so that's why I think it drags."

No, it's not that difficult, but it is pretty hard to describe over the internet.

ditto, but i've had 1 or 7 drinks and i'm willing to try. any of the songs mentioned you can count out at "1 2 3, 1 2 3"... for example, "waltz #2" by elliott smith. listen to the drums at the very beginning of the song--it goes kick snare snare, kick snare snare. the kick is on "1", the snares are on "2" and "3". on the other hand, your average rock, rap, disco or funk song will be in groups of 4. for example, listen to the breakdown at the beginning "blitzkrieg bop" by the ramones. when he says "eh oh, lets go"--- "eh" is on the 1, "oh" is on the 3, "lets" is on the 2 and "go" is on the 3. it's pretty easy to pick out--just try counting along to some of your favorite tunes and don't listen to nerdy-ass prog rock :)

no, so basically 5% of this board used the word waltz in describing some song tonight and doesn't remember what song it was or what a fucking waltz is, and 1% are posting actual waltzes,2% of those actually don't give a fuck what a waltz is but will insist that something is a waltz if someone tries to tell them it isnt', the other 1% is downloading everything listed in this thread and are going to wonder how they got those songs. The other 1% is probably dead or waltzing, which is essentially the same thing. Do you get it? It's a bullshit genre/term like math-rock.

Good call, Hasenfus. Although the lyrics always REALLY creep me out.

On one of the Beatles Anthology CD singles, Lennon intros a live version of "Baby's in Black" by telling the screaming audience "it's a waltz for those of you over 10."

How many hundreds of years does a form of music (the waltz, not math-rock) have to exist to finally not be bullshit?

np: Chopin - The Minute Glitch
