OK, so I'm a fossil and have been dragged into the ipod world so I can have music on long flights and stays in hotels. Since I've got that jones working, here's the question- is the music available at the itunes store for d/l in shitty 128 kbs or what exactly?

128 kbps is right, iirc. however, the files are encoded in aac format, rather than mp3. ime, aac files encoded at this bit rate are roughly analogous to 160 kbps mp3s. however, ymmv, so if you have concerns, pull out a cd, encode a song or two at these settings, are see how it sounds.
