John Roderick found my Long Winters blog entry on Hip-D.

Now what? I feel bad. I'm no Jim DeRogatis. My opinions don't matter.
But I did think he was a jerk.

Sweet. You've now singlehandedly put Hip-D on the map. A high profile feud with a known band is just want the blog needed. I joke, I joke. Seriously though, this is why you can't be a good reviewer and have friends within the industry. I learned the lesson in college as a music director where I have various label reps calling on weekly basis and some of them I really liked and enjoyed talking to. Unfortunately, it was awkward to tell them that "hey, this new album from so and so is a dog, and I refuse to add it."

Yeah, how did he find me at 3:19 in the morning? Was he googling himself?

I really did think he was a jerk, but his comment definitely has me second-guessing that. And considering what he was dealing with regarding the shortbus sound crew, the show was spectacular.

I've written and rewritten a response like 15 times already.

Are you a fan of Jim DeRogatis? I think he's an awful writer.

Dude, this renders my long-standing feud with Chicago's own Kevin Junior rather tertiary, when compared with you going toe-to-toe with John Roderick! Kick ass!!!

I'm friends with him, so yeah, I guess I am a fan. I actually emailed him a link to the Long Winters entry just a few minutes ago.

His writing doesn't bother me.

Gotta hand it to Roderick for his response, though. I was expecting him to attack Jasmine, but he was borderline apologetic.

I think that's probably because she praised the actual music.

agree. The worse thing you can do as a critic is to step down and let someone try to sway your thoughts. It was your impression of the concert. No one likes to be called out. I would however, give him the benefit of the doubt in the situation and check them out next time through. I wouldn't write a retraction though, because it completely devalidates your own thoughts.

It's cool. Lots of people dislike him both personally and professionally. He doesn't care. He's a hell of a nice guy, though.

I'd be a lot more offended by your use of "THEM" in a record interview than your attacks on his demeanor.

I am one of the few who does like him.
Probably because I agree with him a lot of the time.

Still, despite that, he's on-target, consistent, and doesn't care if he pisses anyone off.

he's not even really that critical. i thought that you made a fair point and he responded in kind, it didn't even get that personal. it's kind of cool to see that it doesn't degenerate into name calling.

As someone who has seen LW far too many times beacuse they used to open literally every show put on in Seattle. I think this is a funny development. The banter is way too much, and often if not always takes away from the show.

I think it's a pretty good lesson for John to realize that everyone isn't in on his wittier than thou saracsm and perhaps making wisecracks in between only half of the set might come off a bit better.
