Paul Gonsalves = heroin addict, alcoholic, pills . . . but Duke claimed he had narcolepsy resulting from a tropical illness he had contracted during WWII service in India (although I can imagine that the "tropical illness" may have been a heroin addiction). It's interesting that the dude kicked ass so much that Ellington kept him in the band, despite nodding off on stage like that.
