Over the last few years, I've been listening to more and more singles. I'm usually an albums guy, but so many good singles are from either horrible albums or are only released as singles. And I know certain factions on this board listen to music in which the interest is mostly in singles instead of albums. I'd be willing to throw it together and might make it a little different than the Shmoo Poll, but I'm just wondering... who'd submit a list?

By singles do you mean any individual song, or only actual singles?

i'd really like to avoid it being just any album track, but i suppose the definition of "single" can be flexible. when i think of a single, i think of official releases, videos, and songs in rotation on radio. this can be up for debate, though.

i suppose so, but i'd need clearly defined rules. probably all the songs that qualify for my best-of-2006 would probably qualify here, but bow yow...

z,

What if your favorite song on an album wasn't released as a single? Can you still vote for it?

I never really have any idea what songs from the albums I buy are considered singles. They certainly don't get radio or video play and I don't buy or pay attention to cd-singles or EP's.

I'd be in.

Suggestion: If it's not listed on AMG (or a better comprehensive source if one exists) as under the artist's singles listing, you can't for it. Simple, clear, and easily enforceable.

I'm in. And using the AMG-listed singles would be an interesting challenge.

rateyourmusic.com and wikipedia are also excellent resources, but there's also the problem that some songs are released as singles in some countries and not in others. so, would it be "if it was released as a single anywhere, it's eligible"?

I personally say if it's released as a single where you live but I can see it both ways.

Yeah, Z, at the end of the day it's up to you to decide what to enforce and how to enforce it. My "one resource" idea was a suggestion to make your job easier. Chances are most of us will make the effort to list bona fide singles given the appropriate rules. For those who don't, there will be some album tracks at the bottom of the pool since only one person voted for them.

i've been mulling this over. it seems interest is minimal and a handful of lists will probably include album tracks that weren't officially singles, but i think/hope most people will check if they're not sure about something. (amazon, allmusic, rateyourmusic, and wikipedia are all good resources for checking to see if something was a single or not.)

so, let's give it a test-run this year. if it bombs, then we won't do it again next year. i'll drum up a voting system (probably similar to shmoo poll) and then post about it.

thanks, everyone.

i could make a list of my favorite singles this year but they'd all be pop punk 7"s, not sure how much i would contribute to the poll....i'm almost certain they wouldn't be listed on AMG

If I wasn't already taken, I wouldn't mind pole-ing some singles.

maybe i'll just play by my own rules and whoever puts this together can just cut what they don't think belongs.

I voted no. I couldn't tell you what the single is off of any album I bought this year.
