i recently tested them against my koss sportapros. the sportapros were much better.

are there any buds that can compete against over ear type phones?

I recently got a pair of Sennheiser CX-300s, and they are the best earbuds phones I've ever used.

Is it just me or do walkman-style headphones only last about 3 - 4 months before they sound like shit and you have to buy another pair?

This sums up every pair I've owned in 20 or so years. It doesn't seem to matter what brand, type or cost.

Nowadays I just buy cheap ones because expensive phones just aren't worth the money for the short life they have.

I usually get 10-12 months out of them, and I don't really take good care of them. It normally hasn't been a degradation in sound quality; it's usualy the sound cutting out completely due to cords wearing.

Same here. Although I take much better care of my headphones for home and plan to get much more time out of them.

I listened to the Grado SR-60s and 80s the other day for the first time and concluded that I absolutely need a pair of "open" phones at some point in the future.

I've actually been quite pleased with the standard apple ear buds that come with the ipod. When my first pair broke after about a year, I tried a few different brands to replace them - a $40 sennheiser pair and a $40 centrios pair. They both were very thin and tinny sounding compared to the apple ear buds.

I finally gave in and got another pair of the apple ipod ones.

I just got a pair of E3Cs this week as a Christmast gift to myself to replace my Etymotic ER6i (so I can have a pair at home) and they were a truly "holy shit" type of revelation. I've heard that the E2s and ER6s are very similar in sound, so maybe just going up a step would make you happier. I find the ER6s incredibly clear but just a bit cold sounding and these E3Cs are equally clear but very warm and vibrant. Absolutely the best things to go in my ears besides sound itself.

i really like my e2c's, though i'd reccomend using the foam-ends as the sound quality (and comfort) increase dramatically. for what they cost, i don't think you're going to find any better in-ear headphones

I use the Shure e2c's with my ipod. They sound great, but arent quite as comfortable as I would like them to be...I have a pair of Sony earbuds that were around 40 bucks. They dont sound quite as good but are by far the most comfortable pair of in-ear/earbud style earphones ive ever used.

For podcasting and other shit at home, I use AKG K-44's. Definitely one of their lower tier products and I would absolutely like to get a high dollar set of AKG studio headphones again at some point, but the K-44's do alright, actually sound better than the higher priced K-55's and I have no problem or remorse in throwing them across the room.

wow, this is surprising. i think the default apple buds sound awful, don't really stick solidly in your ear, and start to hurt after a while

I have Sony MDR-V150's, I believe I paid under $20 for them or right around $25. I usually have to get a new pair of stereo headphones about once every year or two. The last pair I owned I accidentally crushed and managed to salvage them for another year using super glue.
Usually the plug end shorts out on me after a bit.

I think mine is an LG 6100VX or something like that. It doesn't say anywhere on it.

Lol, I've become a Headphone Snob of late - plan on buying a headphone Amp to enhance my experience a few months down the road. To those of you who claim that your stock earbuds sound fine, you have no idea what you are missing - you just need to be willing to part with just a bit more money in order to step into the next realm.

Here are a couple of links that I go to a lot to see honest reviews and discuss headphones:

At any rate here is my lineup:

My current faves that go with me on the bus:

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones

Headphones attached to my home computer:

Senneheiser HD-280 Pro

Headphones attached to my work computer:

Sennheiser HD497

Workout Headphones

Shure E2C

Nice lineup. I should really get a headphone amp, too. My next headphone purchase may be the Grado 225s:

I've been messing around with the various ear-end thingies, but haven't gotten around to trying the foams yet. I've been trying to give each a couple days to adjust to the feeling.

For the $80-90 range, I'm pretty sure that you can't go too wrong with either the E2C or ER6i, really. The reviews I've read seem to indicate it's a toss-up between them. I just decided that since it was Christmas and I had been good, I could afford to take the step up. It was a very difficult decision to spend the $150, but WOW was it worth it. For as much listening as I do at work, it was worth the extra money - I'm not getting the ear fatigue that I got with the Etys due to the sound being so much smoother. I couldn't tell my wife that the ER6i pale in comparison (since she got them for me for Christmas the year before,) but they sure do. They're still fantastic headphones, but I can't listen to them side by side, that's for sure. For at-home listening, as little as I get to do now, they'll be great.

I have this one, btw and it is excellent:

PreSonus HP-4

Openly 1,000x better than the Rolls one that I used to have.
