has anyone seen this movie? it's got a pretty generic "good movie" kind of cast, so i'd have expected that i'd have heard more about it by now. any thoughts?

I'm looking forward to it. Penn has had this in development for a couple of years now and from what I hear it translates well to today's political climate even though it's set in 74(?).

I'm a sucker for a politico-drama. Whenever "All the President's Men" is on I always get sucked in.

IMO, Sean Penn and Johnny Depp are two of the best actors of their generation.

4 stars from the Christian Science Monitor? I think that review speaks for itself.

Sean Penn rarely steers me wrong though.

They're right up there, and fewer missteps than most of my other favorite actors...

I don't like Sean Penn. I don't think he's a bad actor, but I don't really enjoy his work.

*cough* Over Actor *cough*

Mystic River ruined him, Eastwood and Robbins for me.

Watch The Crossing Guard or 21 Grams and you will see what I mean

Then again, U Turn and The Game are qual...and also Bad Boys.

This will either be fucking uber-qual or a rat bastard piece of shit.

He was dynamite in Cassavetes' She's So Lovely. And I still love J. Spicole (sp?) from Fast Times ... I don't think AoN will put me in the theatre, but I might rent it some day. His directorial debut, The Indian Runner, is one of my favorites of all-time.

it's funny that you mention Robbins, because i always thought of myself as a fan of his until watching winterbottom's Code 46 the other night, and then i was struck with the thought that this guy really isn't a good actor. i don't know what i was seeing in that movie... oh yeah, it was the gratuitous full-on shot of samantha morton's shaved vag*. that was jarring to say the least.

*seriously, can i get a euphemism for this or what?

8 minutes into this movie, the parallels to the moden era are scary when he's talking about nixon's ability to get the american people to buy the same sales pitch...twice.

I think, like MASH its kind of a "Let's set this in the past and everyone will pick out the parallels to the present" premise.

Buddy, you make Michael Penn look good, so she's obviously with you for your wit and charm, and the expertly grilled fish.
