The Shins' Wincing The Night Away wound up selling 118,000 copies and notching a No. 2 debut--the highest ever for its label, Sub Pop. (The previous record for the label had been set by The Afghan Whigs' Black Love, which entered the chart at No. 79.) A hefty 30% of the Shins' sales came from digital retailers.

Depends. Will there be a TRL appearance? Will there be song placement in this weeks hot teen drama? Cover of Rolling Stone?

Yeah but did they ever sign with a label? Pretty sure they were getting courted pretty heavy.

They still headline clubs around Atlanta and Athens and draw good crowds.

That Afghan Whigs record wasn't even really a Sub Pop record. IT had a logo on it but was actually released by Elektra I believe. i think the highest charting actual sub pop record was Sleater-Kinney's The Woods. Weird how neither of those records are even close to being the highest overall sellers...

They were #7 or so here in Aus this week too. Although that is based on units sent out to retail rather than actual sales...

If I'm not mistaken, the Whigs' last album for Sub Pop was Congregation, two albums away from Black Love. What was that source?
