Ya ever pick up a random CD of a artist or band you were not too familiar with and bought it based on the promo sticker?

I used to do it a lot, but quit after getting burned one too many times.

I use to like the band Clinic, but outgrew the CD's I had and eventually sold em of.. Yesterday I was puttering around Virgin, and saw their new one 'Visitations'....

The sticker read ... "70's horror movies, desiccated blues riffs, pagan sounding folk and even psychobilly..both spooky and compelling... 4/5 UNCUT"

that was enough for me to give the CD a try. About to put it on....Hope it doesn't dissapoint.

I know I've done it a bunch of times, but my brain is shot and I can't think of any right now.

As for that Clinic album, I don't like it. But don't take my word for it.

Did that for a band called Pigeonhed.
Described as (to my memory): "Somewhere between Prince and Soundgarden."

Was never a big Soundgarden fan, but the Prince thing got me. Loved it at first, but have since grown pretty tired of it.

I loved Pigeonhed.....Well anything that Shawn Smith does really..

was this their first record? it does sound rather dated...

but the second one, with the 'semi-hit' on it, is still alright.

When I used to peruse the cut-out/promo bin in college, I did this all the time. A few that I remember:

The National
Fugu
Simian

I usually had a pretty good batting average when it came to picking out stuff blind by either the description or album cover in this bin.

Yup...used to do it all the time when I was younger and there was no internet or music on TV to hear new stuff. A shop I used to go to always had stickers with little descriptions of the records on them, and I picked up a crapload of stuff that way.

Not so much anymore as I more often than not wait and sample something online before buying. Last time I remember buying unheard was based on a sticker comparing the album to Massive Attack's Teardrop on a cover that looked like a picture from Where The Wild Things Are. So, I figured, it was under 10 bucks and they're getting compared to a favorite band of mine and the cover's looking like a great kid's book, so why not? Album was Dusted: When We Were Young, and this was probably 5 years ago and I still listen to it and enjoy it, so sometimes things do work out.

I like the Clinic album a lot, but I haven't heard any of their other stuff, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

I think people should have stickers like these directly on themselves. It would sure make dating a lot easier.

I'm more apt to do this when it says "Your price: 99 cents. Like New. Seller has a 99% customer satisfaction rating."
