Who are they and why do they do this?
Bob Pollard claims its because he learned to sing by singing along with Beatles and Who records. But, they all put on an American accent when they sang. Now, maybe if he name-checked the Small Faces, it would ring true. But... with all die respect to Bob -- whom I love -- that accent makes me giggle.

Most obvious and irritating, for me, is the guy from Green Day. Then there is Madonna but that is when she speaks.

I don't especially like it, but I have no problems with it. Todd Fink/Baechle from The Faint does it sometimes and I won't hold it against him. I see it as no different than foreign singers who sound completely american while singing.

Don’t call what your wearing an outfit. Don’t ever say your car is broke.
Don’t sing with a fake British accent. Don’t act like your family’s a joke.
Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister’s birthday.
Don’t tell them you’re bigger than Jesus, Don’t give it away.

Billie Joe's accent is more "snotnose" than "brit"

Sometimes the accent is seamless, like Beck on "Tropicalia"

Sometimes it's damned silly, like on the first Ministry album.

Speaking of Ringo.

Ringo is my favorite Beatle...always has been and always will be.

Look after the Beatles broke up. George got all mystic and obtuse. John went all arty. Paul just went soft. Ringo got drunk, married Barbara Bach and made a great caveman movie. No comparison...Ringo wins hands down.

Sorry.
No contest.

And though the other three arguably produced higher "quality" post-Beatle solo albums, I'll stack up Ringo's hits with just about any of 'em. It DON'T come easy, motherfuckers!!!

This thread is not complete until we mention Al Jourgensen during his faggy early 80's synthpop days.

Didn't Al have a massive falling out with the other founder of Ministry and booted his ass out? And all the fake brit-synth went with him. Like when Vince Clark left Depeche Mode, except that Al didn't have any Martin Gore left to keep him femme.

I've always thought that Miah sung with a British accent.

first one i thought of...dude from the dears.

also, listening to this menomena album right now, and the lead singer sounds an awful lot like damon albarn.
