Jurassic 5 Go Extinct
2007-03-20 16:56:54.190,
Story by: Elena Marinaccio

After Jurassic 5 founding member Soup told an Australian newspaper last month that the group was calling it quits, rumors have been swirling as to the fate of everyone's favorite old school throwback rap collective. Now, it is confirmed: The Jurassic 5 period is over. A spokesman for the group, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed to CMJ today that they've officially broken up after completing their last performances together in Australia and Japan, noting that each of the six founding members (including Cut Chemist, who cut out after 2002's Power In Numbers) would go on to pursue solo careers.

"I don't want to sit here and fake around with it—we're not seeing eye to eye right now. People see us as a harmonizing, loving group, but that's far from the truth," J5-er Soup told Australia's Gold Coast Bulletin in February. "When it comes down to it, some people here want their own shine, their own thing. If that's what you want, I say 'More power to you.'"

The group rep noted that there is always a chance the collective may reconvene at some point on future collaborations, since they've developed such strong relationships over their 15 years together.

This September, Damian and Stephen Marley, Raphael Sadiq and others will reportedly show up on Chali 2Na's solo record, Fish Out Of Water, for which he is currently seeking out a label. Cut Chemist recently completed a 30-date tour with Shakira, and will likely team up with DJ Shadow on an upcoming project.

I haven't payed attention to them in a long time, but figured there are prolly some here who like them.

Chali 2Na's solo record is going to be called "Fish Out Of Water." If only there was an emoticon of someone cringing.

I haven't been crazy about anything they've put out since quality control.

Their first album fucking slams though.

I've never heard anything by them but Carlinhos Brown was supposed to be opening for them at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. I hope this doesn't cancel his US plans because I'm a big fan.

I agree with the Quality Control sentiment. Kind of sucks though, even if their output wasn't exactly stellar with Feedback.

One thing that has always bothered me about J5 is how they constantly talked about their harmonizing, or that they're doing things in harmony. When multiple people say the same thing in the same tone, it's not harmony, it's UNISON. Did they never realize this? They're a rap group, not a barbershop quartet.

An anonymous spokesman for the group? Did CMJ overhear this in a bathroom?

Will be missed, though.

you're only as good as the last great thing you did. they did some cool stuff in...2001? 2002? feedback was weak, here's hoping they move on to better things.
