Just listening to him for the first time right now and, while I'm enjoying him, sounds like more of a parody of "true" country than anything else. The sound of the music is there. The guy's got a good voice (if a bit cliché). But the lyrics range from dumbass "proud to be wasted"-type stuff to obvious "fuck you to Nashville"!

I'm enjoying it, like I said, but something's kind of leaving me flat.
Grandpa was a poet in his own way. Daddy didn't pretend to be Hank, Sr. Grandson seems like a bit of a wannabe, despite his pedigree.

Anyone else have opinions/thoughts on Tré?

This might be your most lucid post, evar!

I am in concurrence.

I might agree, except that I share his disdain of most pop country of recent times. The gettin' wasted thing does get a bit old though I do admit.

He's got a chip on his shoulder, and for good reason I think. If you don't overproduce your music and make it sound more like straight up pop with a little twang and maybe an occasional fiddle, you don't get anywhere in country music these days with few exceptions. I'm glad there is someone out there with a bit of ability and a bit of pedigree willing to say so, as there sure aren't many left.

I do agree he leans a bit heavily on his grandpa to build his image, but it's not like he straight up apes his sound, which he could easily do and sell a crap load more records than he does.

So damn true. He's already established a 'hellraiser' brand but appears to be trying to perpetuate that brand by including drug/drink-addled lyrics in damn near every song he releases. Granted, the bottle has been a theme in country tunes since the beginning of time, but it almost comes across as cliche with Hank III. I'll still give him the occasional spin (and his band smokes live), but give me a fucking break...

Well, I was rollin' by myself, went down to Memphis, Tennessee
and I was lookin' for a guy who had a mullet and no teeth
and I was trippin' on some acid a latino gave to me
Hey, I was smokin' morphine 'til it knocked me off my feet
Then I scored some "H" from my old Uncle Pete
now I'm startin' to feel like I might've ODed

On an overdose of drugs, overdose of sin
I'm gonna live it to the fullest like I'm on ten
and I love gettin' high - hate bein' low
and I like to drive my truck down a muddy dirt road
and I'm workin' real hard, tryin' to get paid
'cause I'm a crazed country rebel and I'm driftin' state to state

Good point, but just as people bemoan the demise of rock radio, people will bemoan the demise of country radio as well.

I know it's hard to believe in the internet world, but there was a day in the not so distant past where radio was about the only place to hear new music. And, in those days, there was a little more played on radio stations than a dozen or so "hits" played on shuffle by a computer.

And, I also think that country music in general suffers more as, to stereotype here a bit, country is more of a working class/redneck/call it what you will musical style that relies on people turning on cheap radios and taking what they can get.

There are certain Triple A formats I like as long as they have a deep playlist.

It's like tasteful indie, except with Warren Zevon

I'll throw on a little Hank III here and there. Yeah, the raisin' hell theme does wear thin. Also, as far as production, he slaps more echo on his vocals than anyone except Perry Farrell.

Agreed and I have'nt yet been suckered enough to buy anything from him, but I bet if he focused a little bit he could turn out some good albums. He's got potential, but he's seems to me anyway to be a caricature of some comic book hellion hippie rebel. So contrived.

I don't mind Hank III, and I think the pose is genuine. He'll eventually hit his stride and start living up to the lineage.

I had some buddies that opened for him on some dates a few years back, and I can say that at least his consumption habits are genuine.

Funny that the guy is the grandson of Hank Williams, Bocephus's' son and grew up with country music in his veins, but we're the ones who know what's genuine country or not.

Next, I'm gonna go teach Ziggy Marley a thing or two about reggae. That guy's such a poser.

I love all of em. Sr, Jr., and III. Although I've only heard one Hank III album.

I'd love to hang at one of their family BBQ's some summer.............as long as Kid Rock isn't there.

Hank Jr. is great drinkin music.

Not saying that he's not "genuine country"; just saying that it comes off as something like the redneck version of hip-hop braggadocio. Can't stand that stuff either.

It's an enjoyable listen, but the lyrics leave me kinda flat. And yeah, as I said they do leave me feeling like he's TRYING too hard -- bragging about doing stupid crap.
